THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI) PROPOSES TO ANALYZE ARCHIVAL SPITZER WARM MISSION EXOPLANET OBSERVATIONS WITH THE GOAL OF IMPROVING THE PRECISION OF STELLAR PHOTOMETRY DERIVED FROM THOSE OBSERVATIONS. BETTER PHOTOMETRY OF SECONDARY ECLIPSES WILL ENABLE BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES IN EXOPLANETARY ATMOSPHERES. A VARIETY OF TECHNIQUES WILL BE INVESTIGATED ON HOW TO BEST MITIGATE THE DAMAGING EFFECTS ON PRECISION STELLAR PHOTOMETRY CAUSED BY INTRAPIXEL QUANTUM EFFICIENCY VARIATIONS, TELESCOPE POINTING DRIFT AND WOBBLE. ARCHIVAL SPITZER WARM MISSION IRAC 3.6 AND 4.6 MICRON OBSERVATIONS OF SINGLE BRIGHT STARS WILL BE USED TO CREATE NYQUIST-SAMPLED (OR BETTER) POINT RESPONSE FUNCTIONS (PRFS) FOR BOTH CHANNELS. THE NYQUIST-SAMPLED PRFS WILL SAMPLED TO CREATE HIGH-RESOLUTION (20X20) PHOTOMETRIC ERROR MAPS THAT SHOULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVE IRAC STELLAR APERTURE PHOTOMETRY OVER EXISTING PHOTOMETRIC ERROR MAPS PROVIDED BY THE SPITZER SCIENCE CENTER WHICH HAVE 1% ERRORS. DETECTOR RESPONSE FUNCTIONS (DRFS) OF THE IRAC CH1 AND CH2 CAMERAS DESCRIBE THE INTRAPIXEL QUANTUM EFFICIENCY WHICH IS CURRENTLY DESCRIBED WITH A 5X5 MATRIX PROVIDED BY THE IRAC INSTRUMENT TEAM. HIGH-RESOLUTION (0.05 PIXEL) DRFS OF CH1 AND CH2 WILL BE DERIVED FROM THE NYQUIST-SAMPLED PRFS USING MODEL POINT SPREAD FUNCTIONS (PSFS) CREATED WITH TINYTIM/SPITZER OR CODE V. A NEW SOFTWARE TOOL WILL BE DEVELOPED TO DO PRECISION APERTURE STELLAR PHOTOMETRY THAT WILL UTILIZE THE 20X20 PHOTOMETRIC ERROR MAPS; THIS TOOL WILL BE BASED ON THE PI'S CCDCAP APERTURE STELLAR PHOTOMETRY CODE WHICH WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF HIS RESEARCH FOR NASA'S LONG-TERM SPACE ASTROPHYSICS (LTSA) PROGRAM. A NEW SOFTWARE TOOL WILL BE DEVELOPED TO DO PRECISION PRF-FITTING STELLAR PHOTOMETRY THAT WILL UTILIZE THE HIGH-RESOLUTION DRFS AND DISCRETE SYNTHETIC PSFS; THIS TOOL WILL BE BASED ON THE PI'S MPDZ STELLAR PHOTOMETRY CODE WHICH WAS DEVELOPED AS PART OF HIS RESEARCH FOR THE APPLIED INFORMATION SYSTEMS RESEARCH (AISR) PROGRAM. THE PI WILL WORK WITH CURRENT SPITZER EXOPLANET OBSERVERS AND MAKE AVAILABLE DEVELOPMENT (BETA) VERSIONS OF THE PROJECT SOFTWARE DURING THE COURSE OF THE PROJECT. THE SOFTWARE TOOLS DEVELOPED FOR THIS PROJECT AND ITS ATTENDING DOCUMENTATION WILL BE RELEASED TO THE GENERAL SPACE-SCIENCE COMMUNITY AT THE END OF THE PROJECT ON WEB SITES DEDICATED TO THIS PROJECT ON THE WEB SERVER OF THE NATIONAL OPTICAL ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY. - $44,010 - Friday the 10th of July 2015
