BASE DESCRIPTION - MULTIPLE YEAR AWARD - A FOUR YEAR AWARD THAT IS INCREMENTALLY FUNDED. THE AWARD IS IN RESPONSE TO COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT NOTICE (CAN) #NNH08ZDA008C, NASA LUNAR SCIENCE INSTITUTE (NSLI), CYCLE ONE. THIS GRANT IS AWARDED TO BROWN UNIVERSITY, THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR (PI) IS CARLE M. PIETERS,&THE AWARD IS ENTITLED "THE MOON AS CORNERSTONE TO THE TERRESTRIAL PLANETS: THE FORMATIVE YEARS." PROJECT SUMMARY FROM PROPOSAL IS: OUR BROWN/MIT TEAM ACTIVITIES ARE STRUCTURED AROUND FOUR INTEGRATED SCIENCE THEMES&COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH IS CENTRAL TO EACH. THE FIRST THEME, EVOLUTION OF THE LUNAR MAGMA OCEAN, ADDRESSES THE FUNDAMENTAL COMPOSITIONAL&PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE EVOLVING MAGMA SYSTEM DURING THE 1ST FEW HUNDRED MILLION YEARS OF LUNAR HISTORY. WHAT OCCURS DURING THIS CRITICAL PERIOD SETS THE STATE FOR ALL SUBSEQUENT EVENTS. THE SECOND THEME, POST-MAGMA OCEAN STRUCTURE&EVOLUTION, IS AN EARLY EAR COMMON TO MOST SILICATE PLANTS. THERE IS MUCH TO LEARN ABOUT HOW FUNDAMENTAL PROCESSES SUCH AS IMPACT, CORE FORMATION&MELTING OF THE MANTLE PRODUCED THE MOON S INTERNAL STRUCTURE&CONTROLLED THE THERMAL EVOLUTION OF THE MOON. THE THIRD THEME, DECIPHERING THE CRUSTAL RECORD, FOCUSES ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE LUNAR SURFACE&INTERIOR THAT CAN BE STUDIED&EXPLORED WITH ORBITAL DATA&ON PROCESSES THAT CAN BE ADDRESSED USING THE UNIQUE LUNAR ENVIRONMENT. GLOBAL&LOCAL SCIENCE ISSUES REQUIRE EXTENSIVE COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH ACROSS DISCIPLINES. WE DEFINED TEN FUNDAMENTAL SCIENCE QUESTIONS THAT PROVIDE A CONCRETE FRAMEWORK FOR SPECIFIC RESEARCH TASKS TO BE ADDRESSED WITHIN THE NLSI. BY IDENTIFYING INDIVIDUAL TEAM MEMBERS ASSOCIATED WITH EACH TASK, WE ILLUSTRATE HOW EACH BROAD THEME, FRAMEWORK QUESTION,&ULTIMATELY SPECIFIC TASK ARE LINKED&REQUIRE&BENEFIT FROM COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH. SEE THE FILE FOR THE REST OF THE STATEMENT. SPECIAL CONDITION 1260.51 FOR COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT SPECIAL CONDITION. (A) THIS AWARD IS A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT AS IT IS ANTICIPATED THERE WILL BE SUBSTANTIAL NASA INVOLVEMENT DURING PERFORMANCE OF THE EFFORT. JUPITER S MOON EUROPA AND SATURN S SMALL MOON ENCELADUS ARE PRIME TARGETS FOR NASA S NEXT OUTER SOLAR SYSTEM MISSION. BOTH BODIES DISPLAY A RICH VARIETY OF FEATURES INDICATIVE OF EPOCHS OF VIGOROUS RESURFACING AND POSSIBLE CONVECTION IN THEIR INTERIORS (GREELEY ET AL. 2004; PORCO ET AL. 2006; SPENCER ET AL. 2006; NIMMO AND PAPPALARDO 2006; NIMMO ET AL. 2007; BARR AND MCKINNON 2007A). UNDERSTANDING THE INNER WORKINGS OF THESE MOONS ARE KEY GOALS FOR POSSIBLE MISSIONS TO BOTH BODIES (PAPPALARDO ET AL. 2007; SIMON-MILLER ET AL. 2007). IT IS GENERALLY ACCEPTED THAT MUCH OF THE EXOTIC GEOLOGY ON EUROPA S SURFACE WAS CREATED BY AN INTERPLAY BETWEEN TIDAL FLEXING, ASSOCIATED TIDAL DISSIPATION, AND POSSIBLE SOLID-STATE CONVECTION IN A FLOATING ICE I SHELL (GREELEY ET AL. 2004). ALTHOUGH STUDIES OF ENCELADUS GEODYNAMICS ARE IN THEIR EARLY STAGES, A SIMILAR FEEDBACK BETWEEN WARM ZONES, TIDAL FLEXING, AND HEAT TRANSFER IS EXPECTED TO DRIVE PLUME ACTIVITY AND PROVIDE THE HIGH REGIONAL HEAT FLUX NEAR ITS SOUTH POLE (PORCO ET AL. 2006; SPENCER ET AL. 2006; NIMMO AND PAPPALARDO 2006; BARR AND MCKINNON 2007A; NIMMO ET AL. 2007). IN ALL TIDALLY FLEXED ICY SATELLITES WITH FLOATING OUTER ICE I SHELLS, THE MODES OF HEAT TRANSPORT AND RESURFACING DEPEND ON TWO KEY FACTORS: (1) THE RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR OF ICE, AND (2) THE DETAILS OF HOW TIDAL STRAIN AND DISSIPATION ARE PARTITIONED AS A FUNCTION OF LATITUDE, LONGITUDE, AND DEPTH WITHIN A TIDALLY FLEXED ICE SHELL. WE PROPOSE TO USE NEW NUMERICAL TECHNIQUES AND LESSONS FROM TERRESTRIAL ANALOGS TO ADDRESS FOUR FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS RELATED TO TIDAL FLEXING, HEAT TRANSFER, AND RESURFACING IN ICY SATELLITES, WITH THE GOAL OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESSES THAT GIVE RISE TO ENDOGENIC RESURFACING ON TIDALLY FLEXED SATELLITES, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION PAID TO THE OBSERVED BEHAVIOR OF EUROPA AND ENCELADUS. 1. HOW DOES TIDAL DISSIPATION (AS DESCRIBED BY EXISTING THEORIES) AFFECT HEAT TRANSFER IN TIDALLY FLEXED ICE SHELLS? 2. HOW DOES TIDAL STRAIN AND DISSIPATION PARTITION ITSELF AS A FUNCTION OF LATITUDE, LONGITUDE, AND DEPTH WITHIN AN ICE SHELL WITH A HETEROGENEOUS VISCOSITY DISTRIBUTION? (IS THE CURRENT THEORY OF TIDAL DISSIPATION CORRECT, OR DOES IT NEED REVISION?). 3. CAN THE COMBINATION OF TIDAL AND CONVECTIVE STRESSES DRIVE LITHOSPHERIC DEFORMATION ON THE SURFACES OF ICY SATELLITES? 4. HOW DOES THE PRESENCE OF NON-WATER-ICE IMPURITIES AFFECT ICE GRAIN SIZE, RHEOLOGY, AND BY EXTENSION, THE CONDITIONS FOR THE ONSET AND DECAY OF CONVECTION AND HEAT FLUX WITHIN CONVECTING ICE SHELLS? - $78,287 - Tuesday the 28th of February 2017

RECENT INVESTIGATIONS, USING BOTH ORBITAL AND ROVER DATA, HAVE RESULTED IN THE EVOLUTION OF OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE AQUEOUS HISTORY OF MARS. AT THE GLOBAL SCALE, OMEGA VISIBLE AND NEAR INFRARED SPECTRAL MAPPING REVEALED THAT PHYLLOSILICATES ARE MOST COMMONLY OBSERVED IN THE OLDEST, NOACHIAN-AGED ROCKS, AND THAT HYDRATED SULFATES ARE GENERALLY DETECTED IN RELATIVELY YOUNGER HESPERIAN-AGED UNITS. AS PHYLLOSILICATES TYPICALLY FORM UNDER CIRCUMNEUTRAL GEOCHEMICAL CONDITIONS AT HIGH WATER TO ROCK RATIOS, THEY ARE MINERALOGIC INDICATORS FOR WETTER CONDITIONS. HYDROLOGIC MODELING SUGGESTS THAT THE MARTIAN HYDROLOGIC CYCLE WAS DOMINATED BY GROUND WATER INTERACTIONS BY THE LATE HESPERIAN, WHICH RESULTED IN THE CEMENTATION OF PREDOMINATELY AEOLIAN-DERIVED EVAPORITIC DEPOSITS THAT FORMED AT LOW WATER TO ROCK RATIOS. WHILE THE GLOBAL PROSPECTIVE OF MARTIAN AQUEOUS HISTORY IS ONE OF EVOLUTION FROM RELATIVELY WETTER CONDITIONS IN THE NOACHIAN TO A HYPER ARID ENVIRONMENT BY THE END OF THE HESPERIAN, THE NATURE OF THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THESE TWO REGIMES IS NOT WELL UNDERSTOOD. REGIONAL AND LOCAL STUDIES OF DEPOSITS THAT FORMED DURING THE NOACHIAN/HESPERIAN TRANSITION USING THE HIGHEST RESOLUTION DATA ARE REVEALING EVIDENCE FOR COMPLEX DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENTS THAT EXHIBIT A VARIETY OF GEOMORPHIC FEATURES AND ALTERATION MINERALS INDICATIVE OF MULTIPLE GEOCHEMICAL REGIMES. THE PROPOSED WORK SEEKS TO ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF AQUEOUS-DRIVEN SEDIMENTARY AND ALTERATION PROCESSES THAT OPERATED ON MARS AT THE REGIONAL AND LOCAL SCALES BY PERFORMING DETAILED STRATIGRAPHIC MAPPING AND MINERALOGIC ANALYSES OF WELL EXPOSED SEDIMENTARY DEPOSITS IN EASTERN SINUS MERIDIANI USING MRO HIRISE (25 CM/PIXEL), CTX (5 M/PIXEL), AND CRISM (20 M/PIXEL) DATA IN CONJUNCTION WITH OTHER ORBITAL DATASETS. THE TARGET OF THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION, ETCHED TERRAIN DEPOSITS, OCCUR STRATIGRAPHICALLY ABOVE HEAVILY CRATERED NOACHIAN HIGHLANDS AND STRATIGRAPHICALLY BELOW THE LATE NOACHIAN/EARLY HESPERIAN SULFATE- AND HEMATITE- BEARING UNIT EXPLORED BY THE MER OPPORTUNITY ROVER AND ARE THEREFORE IDEALLY SUITED FOR THE STUDY OF PROCESSES THAT OPERATED DURING THE NOACHIAN/HESPERIAN TRANSITION. WE PROPOSE TO (1) DETERMINE THE REGIONAL STRATIGRAPHY IN EASTERN SINUS MERIDIANI (0E TO 8E, -2N TO 4N), (2) DETERMINE THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STRATIGRAPHY AND ALTERATION MINERALOGY TO INFER REGIONAL DEPOSITIONAL AND/OR ALTERATION PROCESSES, (3) PERFORM DETAILED STRATIGRAPHIC AND SPECTRAL MAPPING USING THE HIGHEST SPATIAL RESOLUTION DATA TO FURTHER CHARACTERIZE AQUEOUS PROCESSES FOR AT LEAST FOUR SUBREGIONS, AND (4) INTEGRATE THE REGIONAL AND LOCAL STUDIES TO CHARACTERIZE NOACHIAN/HESPERIAN AQUEOUS-DRIVEN SEDIMENTARY AND ALTERATION PROCESSES THATOPERATED IN EASTERN SINUS MERIDIANI, MARS. - $75,000 - Friday the 10th of July 2015

GOALS: OUR GOAL FOR THIS RID SUBMISSION IS TO SEED TWO NEW AND INNOVATIVE RESEARCH INITIATIVES THAT WOULD ENABLE COMPETITIVE FOLLOW-ON RESEARCH PROPOSALS THROUGH EPSCOR AND NASA OPPORTUNITIES. OBJECTIVES: THIS RID SPECIFICALLY TARGETS THE FOLLOWING TWO EFFORT OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS: (I) COOPERATIVE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE HUMAN TACTILE ABILITIES WITHIN SPACE SUITES; (2) DEVELOPMENT OF NEW METHODS IN NANO-SCALE ENERGY SCIENCE. JURISDICTION'S GOALS AND PRIORITIES: THE BREADTH OF NASA ACTIVITIES REQUIRES A PARALLEL BROAD APPROACH THAT COULD EMBRACE AREAS OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN, PLANETARY EXPLORATION, BIOGEOCHEMISTRY, ASTROBIOLOGY, BIOENGINEERING, HEALTH IN SPACE, AND REMOTE SENSING. BECAUSE EPSCOR SEEKS TO DEVELOP NEW AND SUSTAINABLE RESEARCH AND INDUSTRIAL PARTNERSHIPS, WE WILL CONSIDER NEW DIRECTIONS FROM ALL NASA-RELEVANT AREAS. OUR STRATEGY SPEAKS TO THE DIVERSE EXPERTISE AVAILABLE WITHIN RHODE ISLAND. EACH RID OPPORTUNITY WILL BE USED TO IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP THESE DIRECTIONS INTO A VIABLE AND COMPETITIVE LEVEL FOR EPSCOR RESEARCH AWARDS THAT WOULD LEAD TO SUSTAINABLE NEW PROGRAMS. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS GOAL, WE PROPOSE THE FOLLOWING: SEEK PROPOSALS THAT DEVELOP CREATIVE APPROACHES CROSSING DISCIPLINE BOUNDARIES WHILE STIMULATING NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND SPIN-OFF OPPORTUNITIES. ENABLE YOUNG FACULTY MEMBERS AND RESEARCHERS WHO ARE JUST DEVELOPING THEIR PROGRAMS. PROVIDE RESEARCH SEED FUNDING IN ORDER TO ENABLE MORE ADVANCED, COMPETITIVE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH EPSCOR RESEARCH AWARDS. ESTABLISH NEW AND SUBSTANTIVE CONNECTIONS WITH RESEARCHERS AT NASA CENTERS. EMPHASIS FOR THIS RID WILL BE ON ENERGY-RELATED TECLMOLOGIES (E.G., NEW METHODS FOR SOLAR ENERGY CONVERSION), STRATEGIES TO SUPPORT LONG-TERM HUMAN EXPLORATION (E.G., SMALL AND LARGE BODIES), AND NANO-TECHNOLOGIES TO ENABLE NEW, LOW-COST MISSIONS. PROVIDE DISCRETIONARY SEED FUNDS THAT ALLOWS PURSUING ADDITIONAL FUNDING THROUGH NASA, INDUSTRY, OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES, AND OTHER SOURCES (DOE, ONRLNEWPORT). PARTNER WITH THE RHODE ISLAND SPACE GRANT AND STATE INITITATIVES TO IDENTIFY NEW AREAS THROUGH SEED FUNDING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS, FELLOWSHIPS, AND TRAVEL GRANTS.
