CAPITOL COLLEGE IS A 4-YEAR COLLEGE LOCATED NEARBY GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (GSFC) AND DEDICATED TO ENGINEERING, COMPUTER SCIENCE, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS EDUCATION. THIS INITIATIVE SEEKS TO ENGAGE CAPITOL COLLEGE STUDENTS IN TRMM AND GLOBAL PRECIPITATION MEASUREMENT (GPM) SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING ACTIVITIES THROUGH A MULTI-FACETED EDUCATION PLAN. IN THE INITIAL IMPLEMENTATION PHASE OF THE PROJECT, CAPITOL COLLEGE STUDENTS WILL APPLY TO BECOME GPM STUDENT AMBASSADORS. THEY WILL DEVELOP A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF TRMM AND GPM SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING THROUGH SPECIAL SESSIONS WITH GPM STAFF AND SELF-STUDY. AFTER DEVELOPING A BASELINE UNDERSTANDING OF THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE MISSION AS WELL AS THE NEED FOR GPM-RELATED ACTIVITIES, THESE STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP INTERACTIVE WEB-BASED OR HANDS-ON GAMES OR ACTIVITIES FOCUSED ON GPM THEMES AND MESSAGES. THIS WORK WILL BE GUIDED BY AN ACADEMIC ADVISOR AT CAPITOL COLLEGE AND SUPPORTED BY SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS AT NASA GSFC. INITIALLY THIS PILOT PROGRAM WILL INVOLVE STUDENTS FROM CAPITOL COLLEGE DUE TO THE SCHOOL S PROXIMITY TO GSFC AND THE CONNECTION THE COLLEGE HAS WITH TRMM ACTIVITIES. HOWEVER, FOLLOWING THE TEST OF THIS CONCEPT WITH CAPITOL COLLEGE, WE WILL EXPAND THIS PROGRAM TO OTHER INTERESTED COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES WITH THE HELP OF THE PMM SCIENCE TEAM, FOCUSING IN AREAS WHERE WE HAVE SCIENTISTS THAT ARE INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THIS EFFORT. ALL PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS AND STUDENT AMBASSADORS WILL BE SELECTED ACCORDING TO A COMPETITIVE APPLICATION PROCESS.
