FABRICATION/MACHINING TEST COUPONS PROCESSING STUDY - THIS PROCUREMENT IS FOR FABRICATION/MACHINING OF 2.5D/3D TEST COUPONS AND PROCESSING STUDY WITH OXIDE/OXIDE CERAMIC MATRIX COMPOSITE SPECIMENS. THE EVALUATIONS/STUDY FROM THIS PROCUREMENT IS BEING USED TO MAKE COMPARISONS OF COMPOSISTES FROM ANOTHER STUDY PROVIDED BY COI CERAMICS WHOSE PROPERTIES HAVE ALREADY BEEN ASSESSED. THE FOLLOW-ON STUDY HAS TO MATCH RECENTLY PURCHASED STUDY. - $38,457 - Thursday the 5th of July 2012

IGF::OT::IGF - THIS PROCUREMENT IS FOCUSED ON OBTAINING TWO FULL SCALE CMC MIXER NOZZLES. THEY WILL BE SIMILAR TO THE PREVIOUSLY FABRICATED SUBSCALE MIXER NOZZLES IN THAT THEY WILL HAVE 16 LOBES, HOWEVER, THESE NOZZLES ARE EXPECTED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 32 IN DIAMETER. EACH COMPONENT WILL BE MADE OF AS-N610, A HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDE/OXIDE CMC MANUFACTURED BY COIC, INC. THAT MATERIAL SHOULD YIELD THE NECESSARY PROPERTIES TO ALLOW SUCH A COMPONENT TO OPERATE AS PART OF A SUBSONIC JET ENGINE FOR 80,000 HRS. THE FIBER ORIENTATION IS ASSUMED TO BE 0/90 , WITH A MAXIMUM LOBE THICKNESS OF 5 PLIES (0.080 ). THE ATTACHMENT AREAS (REGIONS WHERE THE CMC MIXER NOZZLE ARE JOINED TO A METALLIC FLANGE THAT IS USED TO HOLD THE NOZZLE IN PLACE AT THE BACK OF AN ENGINE) ARE ASSUMED TO BE A MAXIMUM OF 0.12 THICK WITH A BOLTED SHEAR CONNECTION. THE GEOMETRY OF THE PROPOSED MIXER IS BASED ON LIBERTYWORKS DRAWING 23086641. THAT DRAWING IS RRLW PROPRIETARY. A DESIGN/MODELING EFFORT SUPPORTED BY THE TEAM MEMBERS LISTED ABOVE AND SUPPORT SERVICES, LLC, IS BEING PERFORMED TO MATURE THE DESIGN, TO COME UP WITH THE OPTIMUM PLACEMENT OF THE HOLES REQUIRED FOR ATTACHING THIS CMC COMPONENT TO THE ATTACHMENT FLANGE. RRLW IS PROVIDING THE TEAM WITH THE NECESSARY INFORMATION ON ENGINE OPERATING CONDITIONS (GAS FLOW RATE, TEMPERATURES, PRESSURES, ETC.) THAT WILL ALLOW A SOPHISTICATED DESIGN THAT WILL PROVIDE THE NECESSARY DETAILS ON THE FINAL CONFIGURATION AND THE REQUIRED TOLERANCES. COIC WILL BE PROVIDED AN ENGINEERING DRAWING AND CAD (COMPUTER-ASSISTED DESIGN) MODEL OF THE LAYUP DEFINITION, THICKNESSES, AND COLD FLOW GEOMETRY (ALL RRLW PROPRIETARY). THE CAD MODEL DEFINITION MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE THE TOOLING REQUIRED FOR FABRICATING THE NOZZLES CAN BE PREPARED. COIC WILL SHIP THE NOZZLES TO NASA GLENN RESEARCH CENTER. COIC HAS DETERMINED THE COST OF THIS EFFORT BASED ON THE DRAWING THAT WAS PROVIDED AND THEIR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN FABRICATING OXIDE/OXIDE CMCS ESPECIALLY THEIR EXPERIENCE IN FABRICATING THE SUBSCALE CMC MIXER NOZZLE. THEY ESTIMATED THE MATERIALS COSTS AND NUMBER OF HOURS REQUIRED FOR FABRICATION OF THE CMC HARDWARE. THE QUOTED PRICE COVERS TOOLING COSTS AND NON-RECURRING ENGINEERING COSTS, AS WELL AS THE COST OF FABRICATING THE TWO CMC MIXER NOZZLES.
