WE PROPOSE: (I) TO MAKE IN SITU AEROSOL SIZE DISTRIBUTION MEASUREMENTS IN THE TROPICAL UPPER TROPOSPHERE AND LOWER STRATOSPHERE TO BETTER UNDERSTAND TRANSPORT AND FORMATION OF THE AEROSOL ENTERING THE STRATOSPHERE; (II) TO MAKE MEASUREMENTS THAT WILL BE OF USE IN VALIDATING SATELLITE SENSORS THAT NASA IS FLYING OR PLANNING TO FLY AND (III) TO DEVELOP AND FLY A LIGHT AND COMPACT INSTRUMENT WHICH WILL PERMIT STUDY OF CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE UPPER TROPOSPHERIC (UT) AND LOWER STRATOSPHERIC (LS) AEROSOL. WE WILL REPORT THE DETAILED SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS IN THE DIAMETER RANGE FROM 4 NM TO 1000 NM AND INTEGRATED PARAMETERS SUCH AS AEROSOL NUMBER / SURFACE / AND VOLUME CONCENTRATIONS. THESE MEASUREMENTS AND ANALYSES SUPPORT NASA S INTEREST IN (1) STUDYING ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF OZONE IN THE STRATOSPHERE AND (2) STUDYING PROCESSES GOVERNING THE FORMATION / TRANSPORT / AND TRANSFORMATION OF AEROSOL IN THE UT/LS. THESE MEASUREMENTS WILL BE MADE IN THE TC4 MISSIONS AND RELATED MISSIONS SUCH AS THOSE TO BE FLOWN WITH THE GLOBAL HAWK UNMANNED AERIAL SYSTEM (UAS). WE ALSO PROPOSE TO DEVELOP A COMPACT AND LIGHT AIRBORNE INSTRUMENT TO DETERMINE THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF AEROSOL PARTICLES IN THE UT/LS. THESE MEASUREMENTS WILL ASSIST IN UNDERSTANDING THE AEROSOL CHEMISTRY OBSERVED IN THE UPPER TROPOSPHERE AND LOWER STRATOSPHERE. THE PROPOSED INSTRUMENT WILL PERMIT DETERMINE PARTICLES TO IDENTIFIED AS SULFATE / ORGANIC / OR SOOT DEPENDING UPON MEASURED PHYSICAL DIAMETER / REAL REFRACTIVE INDEX / COMPLEX REFRACTIVE INDEX / DENSITY AND AERODYNAMIC DIAMETER. THE PROPOSED AIRBORNE MEASUREMENTS OF AEROSOL SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS AND AEROSOL CHEMISTRY WILL ALSO CONTRIBUTE TO THE VALIDATION OF NASA SATELLITES INTENDED FOR THE STUDY OF ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION AND CLIMATE.
