SHOCK ACCELERATION AND TRANSPORT OF SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLES FROM THE CORONA TO>1 AU. THIS PROPOSAL ADDRESSES FOCUSED SCIENCE TOPIC 3(B): USE INNER HELIOSPHERIC OBSERVATIONS TO BETTER CONSTRAIN CORONAL MASS EJECTION (CME) AND SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLE (SEP) EVENT MODELS. WE WILL DEVELOP A MODEL TO STUDY IN DETAIL THE INTERPLANETARY TRANSPORT AND ACCELERATION OF MULTI-SPECIES SOLAR ENERGETIC PARTICLES (SEPS) AT A CME-DRIVEN SHOCK THAT PROPAGATES FROM THE SOLAR CORONA TO>1 AU. THE NON-LINEAR TIME-DEPENDENT MODEL WILL INCLUDE SELF-CONSISTENT INTERACTION BETWEEN SEPS AND ALFVEN WAVES, USING A PITCH-ANGLE DEPENDENT RESONANCE CONDITION. FOR SEPS, THE MODEL WILL INCLUDE FOCUSING, CONVECTION, ADIABATIC DECELERATION, PITCH-ANGLE SCATTERING, AND MOMENTUM DIFFUSION. TREATMENT OF ALFVEN WAVES WILL INCLUDE PROPAGATION, SEP-DRIVEN GROWTH/DAMPING, SHOCK TRANSMISSION, AND CASCADING. WE WILL ANALYZE OBSERVATIONS OF MULTI-SPECIES ENERGETIC IONS IN SHOCK-ASSOCIATED SEP AND ENERGETIC STORM PARTICLE (ESP) EVENTS BY THE ACE, GOES, WIND, AND STEREO SPACECRAFT TO TEST AND CONSTRAIN THE MODEL. THE ANALYSIS WILL INCLUDE TIME AND ENERGY VARIATIONS OF SEP INTENSITIES, ELEMENTAL ABUNDANCES, AND ANISOTROPIES. CONCURRENT OBSERVATIONS OF SEPS, PLASMA AND MAGNETIC FIELD ON MULTIPLE SPACECRAFT AS WELL AS ELECTROMAGNETIC SOLAR EMISSIONS WILL BE USED WITH THE MODEL TO ADDRESS ISSUES REGARDING THE IMPORTANCE OF EVOLVING SHOCK-NORMAL (BN) ANGLE, SHOCK SPEED, ALFV N SPEED, AND OTHER SHOCK AND PLASMA PARAMETERS, PARTICLE SCATTERING, WAVE AMPLIFICATION, AND HEAVY-ION SUPRATHERMAL REMNANTS FROM PREVIOUS SEP EVENTS.

MODIS CALIBRATION AND CHARACTERIZATION SUPPORT THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO CARRY OUT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND DEVELOP TOOLKITS TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR NASA MODIS CALIBRATION AND CHARACTERIZATION, AND TO EXTEND THE OLD PROJECT ENTITLED NASA/GSFC MODIS CHARACTERIZATION SUPPORT WHICH WAS EXPIRED ON NOVEMBER, 2010. MODIS IS A KEY INSTRUMENT ABOARD THE NASA TERRA AND AQUA SATELLITES. WITH 36 DISCRETE SPECTRAL BANDS, ALMOST DAILY GLOBAL COVERAGE, AND CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENTS SINCE 2000 (TERRA MODIS) AND 2002 (AQUA MODIS), MODIS IS INVALUABLE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING, NATURAL HAZARDS DETECTION AND FORECASTING, AND CLIMATE CHANGE AND VARIATION STUDY. WHILE CALIBRATION IS CRITICAL FOR THE QUALITY OF MODIS DATA PRODUCTS, THIS PROPOSAL IS INTENT TO INVESTIGATE THE TERRA AND AQUA MODIS CALIBRATION CONSISTENCY OVER TIME AND SPATIAL REGIONS. THE PROPOSED TASKS INCLUDING 3 COMPONENTS: 1) TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT. TECHNICAL APPROACHES AND SOFTWARE TOOLKITS FOR TERRA AND AQUA MODIS INTER-COMPARISON WILL BE DEVELOPED FOR INVESTIGATION OF TERRA AND AQUA MODIS CONSISTENCY. 2) SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL ANALYSIS TO CHARACTERIZE TERRA AND AQUA MODIS DIFFERENCE AND INVESTIGATE TERRA AND AQUA MODIS CONSISTENCY. 3) EDUCATION. TRAINING GRADUATE STUDENTS TO LEARN CALIBRATION AND ANALYZE THE IMPACTS OF CALIBRATION CONSISTENCY. THE RESULTS SHOULD BE VERY HELPFUL FOR THE MODIS CHARACTERIZATION SUPPORT TEAM (MCST) TO MONITOR MODIS SENSOR STATUS AND IMPROVE MODIS L1B DATA PRODUCTS. THE PROPOSED METHODOLOGY AND SOFTWARE TOOLKITS CAN BE STRAIGHTFORWARDLY EXTENDED TO THE NEXT GENERATION SENSOR, VIIRS, WHICH WILL BE LAUNCHED IN 2011. THUS, THE PROPOSED TASKS WILL ALSO BE HELPFUL FOR VIIRS CALIBRATION AND CHARACTERIZATION IN NEAR FUTURE. IN ADDITION, EDUCATING AND TRAINING GRADUATE STUDENTS IN SENSOR CALIBRATION AND CHARACTERIZATION IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT FOR FOSTERING SKILLED AND INNOVATIVE SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF FUTURE MISSIONS. THIS PROPOSAL MAINLY COVERS ONE GMU PH.D. STUDENT (FULL SUPPORT) TO SUPPORT MODIS CALIBRATION EFFORTS FOR THREE YEARS, STARTING FROM SEPTEMBER 1, 2011, AND ENDING ON AUGUST 31, 2014. TWO GMU FACULTIES WILL BE PARTIALLY COVERED TO DIRECT THE PHD STUDENTS AND CONDUCT RELATED RESEARCH WORKS. THE SUPPORT SHOULD BE RENEWED EACH YEAR DEPENDING ON THE WORK PERFORMANCE AND FUNDING AVAILABILITY. FOLLOWING ARE THE STATEMENTS OF WORK (SOWS) UNDER THIS AGREEMENT. IF NEEDED, A NEW SOW FOR EACH HIRE TASK CAN BE ADDED IN THE PROPOSAL BASED ON NASA GSFC NEEDS IN THE FUTURE.

THE CURRENT PROPOSAL AIMS TO DEVELOP A GEOSPATIAL CYBERINFRASTRUTURE TO SUPPORT THE CLIMATE@HOME PROJECT. VERSIONS OF THE CURRENT GISS MODELE (GISS-E2) CAN BE RUN ON ALL COMMON PERSONAL COMPUTERS (E.G., MS WINDOWS, MACINTOSH, AND LINUX), LINKED TO A NASA CLOUD ENVIRONMENT, OR CAN BE DISTRIBUTED PRE-COMPILED VIA THE INTERNET. THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF CLIMATE@HOME WILL ENABLE INCREASES IN COMPUTING BY BROADENING PARTICIPATION AT MUCH LOWER COST THAN ADDING NEW COMPUTING RESOURCES TO THE COLUMBIA SUPERCOMPUTER TO PURSUE THE PPE SIMULATIONS. SINGLE PROCESSOR JOBS ARE A POOR USE OF HIGH-END SYSTEMS; EVEN BACKGROUND PROCESSING WILL INTERFERE WITH EXPERIMENTS REQUIRING CAPABILITY COMPUTING. CLOUD COMPUTE CYCLES ARE MORE READILY AVAILABLE THAN HPC CYCLES. WHILE CLOUD COMPUTATION WILL NOT BE CHEAPER FOR DEDICATED AND FULLY UTILIZED COMPUTING JOBS, IT WILL HELP ENABLE HPC JOBS WITH IRREGULAR NEEDS WITH ELASTIC COMPUTING RESOURCES, E.G., IN PERFORMING THE INITIAL 300 PPE RUNS, WE PROVISIONED 80-160 CORE VIRTUAL MACHINES IN A FEW MINUTES. WHEN THE RUNS WERE FINISHED, THE CORES WERE RELEASED FOR OTHER NEEDS (FIGURE 1).
