WE PROPOSE TO STUDY JUPITER S ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS IN TWO OF THE LEAST-EXPLORED DOMAINS, THE WATER CLOUD BASE LAYER BELOW THE VISIBLE CLOUDS AND THE POLAR REGIONS. THESE TWO REGIONS ARE TO BE PROBED FOR THE FIRST TIME BY THE JUNO MISSION, WHICH IS CURRENTLY BEING READIED TO BE LAUNCHED IN AUGUST 2011. JUNO S TOP-TIER SCIENCE GOALS INCLUDE 1) THE DETECTION OF THE WATER CLOUD BASE THROUGH MICROWAVE REMOTE SENSING, 2) THE DETERMINATION OF THE DEPTH OF ZONAL JETS THROUGH GRAVITY MEASUREMENTS, AND 3) THE FIRST-EVER OBSERVATION OF JUPITER S POLAR REGIONS. WE PROPOSE TO DEVELOP AN ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK FOR THESE PHENOMENA BASED ON ATMOSPHERIC GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL SIMULATIONS IN ADVANCE OF THE MISSION TO BETTER LEVERAGE THE DATA ONCE IT IS OBTAINED. IN ADDITION, WE PROPOSE TO USE RECENT AND FUTURE OBSERVATIONS OF SATURN FROM THE CASSINI MISSION AS AN IMPORTANT POINT OF COMPARISON. CASSINI MEASUREMENTS OF SATURN, WHICH HAVE REVEALED THE DEEP CLOUD STRUCTURES AND THE POLAR ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS, INCLUDE MANY MEASUREMENTS ANALOGOUS TO THOSE JUNO WILL MAKE FOR JUPITER. THE GOAL OF OUR PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS IN THESE POORLY UNDERSTOOD REGIMES TO ENHANCE THE SCIENTIFIC RETURNS OF CASSINI AND JUNO. - $6,037 - Saturday the 29th of September 2012

THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF THE ENVIRONMENT AT THE MOON (DREAM) IS A THEORY-MODELING-DATA VALIDATION EFFORT THAT WILL REVEAL, ADVANCE, AND TEST THE EXTREMES OF THE SOLAR-LUNAR ENVIRONMENTAL CONNECTION. IN DOING SO, IT WILL BE A CENTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL KNOWLEDGE TO GUIDE FUTURE MISSIONS, TO DETERMINE THE VIABILITY OF LUNAR OBSERVATIONAL PLATFORMS AND TO PROVIDE CRITICAL INFORMATION THAT WILL RESULT IN OPTIMAL DECISIONS FOR A SAFE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY-SOUND EXPLORATION. THE LUNAR SURFACE IS BOMBARDED BY A HIGHLY VARIABLE SOLAR SOURCE OF ENERGY AND MATTER, AS WELL AS HIGH-SPEED IMPACTS FROM EXTRA-LUNAR OBJECTS LARGE AND SMALL. IT RESPONDS TO THESE EXTERNAL STIMULI IN A VERY COMPLEX WAY-RELEASING NEUTRAL GAS, CREATING A PLASMA INTERACTION REGION, AND EJECTING DUST GRAINS. FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS REMAIN ON HOW THE VARIOUS RELEASE MECHANISMS OPERATE AND THE ANSWERS TIE TO RELEVANT AND CRITICAL LUNAR SCIENCE ISSUES, INCLUDING CREATION/COLLECTION OF POLAR WATER AND DUST HAZARDS. HUMAN EXPLORERS ON THE LUNAR SURFACE WILL BE IMMERSED IN THIS DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT AND WILL BE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY ITS VARIATIONS. THUS, THE TIMING OF DREAM S RESULTS, WHICH WILL ANSWER KEY ENVIRONMENTAL QUESTIONS, IS CRITICAL-DREAM'S RESULTS FEED DIRECTLY FORWARD TO EXPLORATION AT A KEY TIME OF PREPARATORY ACTIVITY. DREAM ADDRESSES THE MODERN MOON-DEFINING BASIC PHYSICAL PROCESSES THAT ARE ONGOING RIGHT THIS VERY SECOND ON THE LUNAR SURFACE. HOWEVER, GIVEN THE STRONG TIE BETWEEN DREAM'S BASIC SCIENCE GOALS AND EXPLORATION APPLICATION, DREAM ALSO UNIQUELY ADDRESSES THE TRANSITION TO THE STATE OF THE FUTURE MOON. - $24,998 - Wednesday the 2nd of November 2011
