IGF::OT::IGF OTHER FUNCTIONS CASCADE DISTILLATION SUBSYSTEM THE CASCADE DISTILLATION SUBSYSTEM (CDS) IS A WASTEWATER PROCESSING SUBSYSTEM BASED ON CENTRIFUGAL VACUUM DISTILLATION AND USES AN EFFICIENT MULTISTAGE THERMODYNAMIC PROCESS TO PRODUCE PURIFIED WATER. THE NASA ADVANCED EXPLORATION SYSTEMS ORGANIZATION HAS IDENTIFIED THE DEVELOPMENT OF CDS AS A JSC/EC3 WATER TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT TASK FOR FISCAL YEARS (FY) 2012-14. THE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT TASK IS TO BEGIN WITH THE TEARDOWN OF THE CDS THERMOELECTRIC HEAT PUMP (THP) TO DEFINE ITS ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL DESIGN. THIS WORK WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO A NASA-LED TRADE STUDY THAT WILL EVALUATE THE RELATIVE BENEFIT OF VARIOUS THP REDESIGN EFFORTS. FOLLOWING THE TRADE STUDY, AND IF FURTHER THP DEVELOPMENT IS WARRANTED, HONEYWELL WILL SUPPORT THE REDESIGN EFFORT BY COLLABORATING WITH NASA JSC ENGINEERS. FOLLOWING COMPLETION OF THE ABOVE EFFORT, HONEYWELL WILL TEST THE CDS WITH NEW BEARINGS (IMPROVED IN A PREVIOUS PROCUREMENT) AND NEW THP, PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR ELECTRODIALYSIS METATHESIS (EDM) INTEGRATION WITH THE CDS AND PROVIDE LIMITED SUPPORT FOR INTEGRATED TESTING OF THE CDS/EDM AT JSC. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SUPPORT IMPROVEMENTS TO, STANDALONE TESTING OF, INTEGRATION WITH EDM, AND INTEGRATED TESTING OF THE CASCADE DISTILLATION SYSTEM (CDS). PRIMARY ACTIVITIES SHALL INCLUDE THERMOELECTRIC HEAT PUMP (THP) CHARACTERIZATION, OPTIMIZATION/REDESIGN, FABRICATION AND INTEGRATION; CDS TESTING WITH THE NEW BEARINGS AND NEW THP; SUPPORT FOR ELECTRO DIALYSIS METATHESIS (EDM) INTEGRATION WITH THE CDS; AND LIMITED SUPPORT FOR INTEGRATED TESTING OF THE CDS/EDM AT NASA JOHNSON SPACE CENTER (JSC). CONTRACTOR TASKS MAY INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 1. CHARACTERIZE THE EXISTING THP 2. REDESIGN/OPTIMIZE THE THP FUNCTIONALITY OF CDS 3. FABRICATE REDESIGNED THP AND VALIDATE PERFORMANCE 4. INTEGRATE REDESIGNED THP INTO CDS AND TEST 5. DELIVER UPDATED CDS TO JSC FOR TESTING 6. SUPPORT INTEGRATION OF THE EDM SYSTEM WITH THE CDS 7. SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF TEST PLANS AND PROCEDURES FOR INTEGRATED WATER RECOVERY SYSTEM (WRS) TESTING AT JSC - $301,841 - Thursday the 22nd of May 2014
