THE PROGRAM WILL BE DESIGNED TO INCREASE STUDENTS' SKILLS IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE WHILE INCORPORATING TECHNOLOGY IN THE CURRICULUM. THIS IS ACHIEVED THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING (PBL) AEROSPACE THEME. EACH STUDENT WILL BE ASSIGNED TO AN INSTITUTE TEAM. STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP A LESSON THAT THEY TEACH TO CHILDREN FROM THE JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY. THE PSTI PARTICIPANTS WILL TEACH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WHEN THEY RETURN TO THEIR HOME INSTITUTION. STUDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED A SCHOLARSHIP PACKAGE WHICH WILL INCLUDE $500 STIPEND, ROUND-TRIP TRANSPORTATION, MEALS, AND CONTINUE EDUCATION UNITS (CEU'S). THE PSTI WILL IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES OF MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER IN THE STEM FIELD. THIS PROJECT WILL TARGET TRADITIONALLY UNDERSERVED AND UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES. THE PSTI WILL ATTRACT AND RETAIN STUDENTS IN THE STEM DISCIPLINE BY PROVIDING THE TOOLS AND RESEARCH NEEDED TO EXPOSE TEACHERS AND THEIR STUDENTS TO NASA PROGRAMS AND ENGAGE AND ENCOURAGE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TO BECOME ENTRENCHED AND EXCITED ABOUT NASA'S RESEARCH. THIS PROGRAM WILL ALSO ENGAGE TEACHERS IN NASA MISSION AND BUILD PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS, THE COMMUNITY, UNIVERSITY AND INFORMAL EDUCATION ENTITIES. THE NASA EDUCATIONAL GOAL IS STRENGTHEN NASA AND THE NATION'S FUTURE WORKFORCE PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: TO MODEL AND PROMOTE THE USE OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY THROUGH PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS. TO ENHANCE PRE-SERVICE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS' KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE. TO PROMOTE ENTHUSIASM AND SELF-CONFIDENCE FOR TEACHING SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS FOR PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN.
