LITHIUM-ION POUCH CELLS ARE USED MORE EXTENSIVELY FOR PORTABLE EQUIMENT AS WELL AS LARGE BATTERY DESIGNS FOR AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS. LITIUM-ION POUCH CELLD HAVE THE CHALLENGE OD EXPANDING UNDER VACUUM CONDITIONS AS WWELL AS WHEN LEFT IN STORAGE AT AMBIENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS FOR LONG PERIODS. THE USE OF A VACUUM LEAK CHECK AND EXPOSURE TO VACUUM ENVIRONMENTS IS A REQUIREMENT FOR MOST NASA RELATED SPACE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMS AS THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE THAT THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION OR OTHER INTERNATIONAL PARTNER VEHICLES OR COMMERCIAL PARTNER VEHICLES CAN BE SUBJECTED TO A DEPRESS IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. HENCE THE VACUUM EXPOSURE, WHICH ALSO PROVIDES A MEANS OF CHECKING A CELL OR BATTERY FOR LEAKS AND HAS BEEN TRADITIONALLY USED TO LEAK CHECK 100% OF THE FLIGHT BATTERIES INCLUDING BUTTON CELLS. WITH THE VACUUM EXPOSURE BEING A CHALLENGE FOR POUCH CELLS, IT IS IMPERATIFVE TO UNDERSTAND THIS CHALLENGE AND WORK TOWARDS A SUITABLE SOLUTION. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS WORK IS TO STUDY POUCH CELLS OF DIFFERENT DESIGNS FROM 3 DIFFERENT CELL MANUFACTURERS. THE PLAN WILL INVOLVE TESTING UNDER AMBIENT, REDUCED PRESSURE, AND VACUUM AND DEEP VACUUM ENVIRONMENTS. A DETAILED REPORT WITH THE METHODOLOGY, OBSERVATIONS, AND CONCLUSIONS WILL BE SUBMITTED AT THE COMPLETION OF THE WORK. SPREADSHEETS OF THE DATA FILES WITH ALL CHARGE/DISCHARGE DATA FOR ALL THE TESTS SHOULD BE SENT BY ELECTRONIC MAIL OR ON A CD. PLOTS SHALL BE PROVIDED IN THE REPORT AS INDICATED IN THE RESPECTIVE SECTIONS. PROVIDE VIDEO/PHOTOS WHENEVER POSSIBLE. - $7,200 - Friday the 10th of August 2012
