BASE DESCRIPTION: MULTIPLE YEAR AWARD, FIVE YEAR AWARD. THE AWARD IS ENTITLED "ASTROBIOLOGY BIOGEOCATALYSIS RESEARCH CENTER"&IS AWARDED IN RESPONSE TO THE COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT NOTICE (CAN) #NNH05ZDA001C. THE PI IS JOHNS W. PETERS. GRANT INFORMATION CIRCULAR (GIC) 06-02 IS INCLUDED WITH BASIC AWARD. 1260.51 COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT SPECIAL CONDITION. (OCTOBER 2000) COLLABORATION STATEMENT: (A) THIS AWARD IS A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT AS IT IS ANTICIPATED THERE WILL BE SUBSTANTIAL NASA INVOLVEMENT DURING PERFORMANCE OF THE EFFORT. NASA AND THE RECIPIENT MUTUALLY AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT OF ANTICIPATED COOPERATIVE INTERACTIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR DURING THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS EFFORT: UNIVERSITY AND AMES' PERSONNEL WOULD COLLABORATE ON PERFORMANCE OF RESEARCH AND MUTUALLY DETERMINE THE DIRECTION OF THE RESEARCH INTO THE PHYSICAL AND CATALYTIC PROPERTIES OF IRON-SULFUR MINERALS AND COMPLEX IRON-SULFUR ENZYMES. THE WORK WILL BE DONE IN COLLABORATION WITH THE NASA'S ASTROBIOLOGY INSTITUTE AT NASA AMES RESEARCH CENTER. (B) THE TERMS "GRANT" AND "RECIPIENT" MEAN "COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT" AND "RECIPIENT OF COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT," RESPECTIVELY, WHEREVER THE TERMS APPEAR IN PROVISIONS AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS INCLUDED IN THIS AGREEMENT. (C) NASA'S ABILITY TO PARTICIPATE AND PERFORM ITS COLLABORATIVE EFFORT UNDER THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT IS SUBJECT TO THE AVAILABILITY OF APPROPRIATED FUNDS HING IN THIS COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT COMMITS THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO APPROPRIATE FUNDS THEREFORE. PROPOSAL SUMMARY: IRON-SULFIDE COMPOUNDS ARE COMMON IN BOTH BIOLOGICAL AND GEOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. THE ADAPTION OF IRON-SULFIDE CLUSTERS FROM THE ABIOTIC WORLD TO THE BIOLOGICAL WORLD WAS POTENTIALLY AN EARLY EVENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LIFE ON EARTH AND MAY BE A COMMON FEATURE OF LIFE ELSEWHERE IN THE UNIVERSE. WE PROPOSE TO ESTABLISH A RESEARCH AND EDUCATION EFFORT THAT WILL INVESTIGATE AND COMPARE THE PHYSICAL&CATALYTIC PROPERTIES OF IRON-SULFUR MINERALS&COMPLEX IRON-SULFUR ENZYMES. THE STUDIES WILL BE AIMED AT PROVIDING THE DETERMINANTS THAT DEFINE THE CATALYTIC PROPERTIES OF IRON-SULFUR CLUSTER CATALYSTS USING H2&N2 ACTIVATION AS MODEL REACTIONS. THE RESULTS OF THE ASTROBIOLOGY BIOGEOCATALYSIS RESEARCH CENTER'S EFFORTS WILL SUPPORT THE MISSION OF NASA IN THE AREA OF PREBIOTIC CHEMISTRY&THE DEVELOPMENT OF SIGNATURES FOR TERRESTRIAL AND EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIFE. THE EXISTENCE OF NEAR-SURFACE NORTHERN MID-LATITUDE GROUND ICE ON MARS HAS BEEN INFERRED BY BOTH THE MARS GAMMA RAY SPECTROMETER (GRS) INSTRUMENT AND OBSERVED BY THE PHOENIX MISSIONS. GROUND ICE HAS BEEN INFERRED FROM THE GRS DATA BY ANALYZING HYDROGEN ABUNDANCES IN THE TOP METER OF REGOLITH (BOYNTON ET AL 2002), AND THE PHOENIX MISSION PROVIDED PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE OF AN ICE TABLE (MELLON ET AL 2009). SURFACE WATER FROST AND SNOW HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE A STABILIZING EFFECT ON ANTARCTIC SUBSURFACE ICE (HAGEDORN ET AL. 2007, MCKAY 2009, SCHORGHOFER 2009). THE EXISTENCE OF A TRANSIENT SNOW OR FROST COVER PROVIDES A SOURCE OF HUMIDITY WHICH SHOULD REDUCE THE HUMIDITY GRADIENT AND HENCE THE SUBLIMATION LOSS FROM SUBSURFACE ICE. NEVERTHELESS, DIURNAL AND SEASONAL SURFICIAL WATER FROST AND SNOW APPEARS TO BE LARGELY ABSENT FROM MARS GROUND ICE MODELS, E.G. MELLON&JAKOSKY (1993, 1995) . BY UTILIZING STATE OF THE ART ATMOSPHERIC AND GROUND ICE MODELING, WE PROPOSE TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH SUBSURFACE ICE DEPOSITS MAY BE THERMODYNAMICALLY STABILIZED BY THE EXISTENCE OF DIURNAL AND SEASONAL SURFICIAL WATER FROST DEPOSITS (SCHORGHOFER&EDGETT, 2006; SVITEK&MURRAY, 1990). THE MODELING WILL INCLUDE A GROUND-ICE MODEL (DEVELOPED IN WILLIAMS ET AL. 2008 AS A SNOWPACK MODEL, BUT MODIFIED FOR GROUND ICE) MODIFIED TO INCLUDE THE THIN DIURNAL AND SEASONAL FROST DEPOSITS AND DRIVEN BY ATMOSPHERIC OUTPUT FIELDS FROM THE NASA AMES MARS GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL (MGCM). RESULTS WILL PROVIDE A GREATER INSIGHT INTO THE PRESERVATION MECHANISMS AND THE APPARENT WIDESPREAD PLACEMENT OF GROUND ICE IN THE SHALLOW SUBSURFACE AT NORTHERN MARTIAN MID-LATITUDES, AS WELL AS SHORT-TIMESCALE VARIABILITY IN THEIR DEPTH AND EXTENT - $5,200 - Wednesday the 1st of February 2012
