RECENT ADVANCES IN AIRPORT SURFACE SURVEILLANCE HAVE MOTIVATED THE CREATION OF NEW TOOLS FOR ANALYSIS OF AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL (ATC) OPERATIONS, SUCH AS THE SURFACE OPERATIONS DATA ANALYSIS AND ADAPTATION (SODAA) TOOL, WHICH IS BEING USED BY NASA TO CONDUCT AIRPORT ATC OPERATIONS ANALYSIS. WHAT IS MISSING FROM ATC OPERATIONS ANALYSIS, HOWEVER, IS ACCESSIBLE AND RELIABLE DATA REGARDING THE CLEARANCES ISSUED BY THE CONTROLLER AND OTHER COMMUNICATION CONDUCTED WITH THE PILOT THAT INFLUENCES THE BEHAVIOR SEEN IN THE SURVEILLANCE DATA. THE RELIANCE ON VOICE COMMUNICATION IN ATC OPERATIONS PRESENTS CHALLENGES TO THE RESEARCHER WHO IS TRYING TO OBTAIN DATA AND CONDUCT DETAILED ANALYSES OF ATC OPERATIONS. DURING THE PHASE I EFFORT, WE DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED A PROTOTYPE SYSTEM TO PERFORM AUTOMATIC SPEECH RECOGNITION (ASR) OF ATC CLEARANCES. WE DEMONSTRATED THE FEASIBILITY OF RECOGNIZING ATC CLEARANCES FROM SPEECH AUDIO DATA AND ASSOCIATING THE CLEARANCE DATA WITH THE FLIGHT THAT IS THE SUBJECT OF THE CLEARANCE. IN THE PHASE II EFFORT, WE WILL CREATE A COMPLETE PROTOTYPE OF THE ATC SPEECH RECOGNITION, PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS CAPABILITY IN SODAA. IN ADDITION, WE WILL INTEGRATE ATC SPEECH RECOGNITION CAPABILITIES INTO A REAL-TIME APPLICATION IN THE SURFACE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (SMS). - $665,870 - Thursday the 2nd of March 2017

DEVELOPMENT OF AIRPORT SURFACE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT REQUIREMENTS RESULTING FROM VARIATIONS IN AIRPORT CHARACTERIZATION. THE NASA HEADQUARTERS AERONAUTICS RESEARCH MISSION DIRECTORATE (ARMD) NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT (NRA) ENTITLED RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN AERONAUTICS 2010, (ROA-2010), NNH10ZEA001N,NEXTGEN CONCEPTS AND TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT(CTD2) SUBTOPIC 3 EXPAND SURFACE OPTIMIZATION FUNCTIONS AND ADVISORY TOOLS TO A BROADER BASE OF AIRPORT OPERATIONS. THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE CRITICAL INFORMATION THAT WILL ENABLE SAFE AND EFFICIENT SURFACE OPERATIONS (SESO) RESEARCH FOCUS AREA (RFA) TO EXPAND SPOT AND RUNWAY DEPARTURE ADVISOR (SARDA) DESIGN THAT WILL ENABLE TO OPERATE AT ANY HIGH DENSITY AIRPORT AND CONDUCT A FAST-TIME SIMULATION AND ANALYSIS TO IDENTIFY REQUIREMENTS ON AIRPORT SURFACE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT (ASTM). EXPAND SURFACE OPTIMIZATION FUNCTIONS AND ADVISORY TOOLS TO A BROADER BASE OF AIRPORT OPERATIONS CONDUCT FEASIBILITY STUDY AND FAST-TIME SIMULATION USING METROPLEX SIMULATION ENVIRONMENT (MSE). NASA INTENDS TO REUSE THE THREE MSE ADAPTED AIRPORTS WITHIN THE SURFACE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM (SDSS) CODEBASE. CONDUCT SIMULATION ASSESSMENT OF THE AIRPORT SURFACE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT (ASTM) CANDIDATE DESIGN, WHICH ADAPTS THE EXISTING SARDA CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS TO THE THREE SELECTED AIRPORTS AND STUDIES POSSIBLE SARDA EXTENSIONS. IDENTIFYING THE BENEFITS TO BE OBTAINED THROUGH APPLICATION OF SARDA AND OTHER ASTM ALGORITHMS TO THREE SELECTED AIRPORT BY: CREATING A METHODOLOGY TO SELECT SUITABLE AIRPORTS FOR STUDY DEVELOPING METHODS AND METRICS TO ASSESS THE SARDA ALGORITHMS THROUGH FAST-TIME SIMULATION GENERALIZING THE SARDA TOOL TO PROVIDE BENEFITS AT THE SELECTED AIRPORTS RECOMMENDING NEXTGEN FEATURES NEEDED TO IMPLEMENT THE SARDA ALGORITHMS - $514,646 - Thursday the 2nd of March 2017
