THE OWENS VALLEY SOLAR ARRAY (OVSA), A SOLAR-DEDICATED RADIO INTERFEROMETER ARRAY, WILL SHORTLY UNDERGO A MAJOR EXPANSION WITH $5.1 M OF NEW NSF FUNDING, AND BY THE TIME OF ITS COMPLETION IN 2013 WILL BECOME A COMMUNITY FACILITY CAPABLE OF VASTLY IMPROVED IMAGE QUALITY, SPATIAL, SPECTRAL, AND TEMPORAL RESOLUTION. THE PRIMARY SCIENCE GOALS OF THE PROJECT, MADE POSSIBLE BY THE FACILITY S UNPRECEDENTED CAPABILITIES IN MICROWAVE IMAGING SPECTROSCOPY ARE: TO DETERMINE THE MAGNETIC AND PLASMA STRUCTURE IN THE CORONA ABOVE SOLAR ACTIVE REGIONS, TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE PROCESSES OF PARTICLE ACCELERATION IN SOLAR FLARES, AND TO DETECT, MEASURE AND BETTER UNDERSTAND THE DRIVERS OF SPACE WEATHER. AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE NEW CAPABILITIES, THE DATA FORMAT AND ALL ANALYSIS SOFTWARE WILL BE COMPLETELY REFORMULATED. THIS PROPOSAL SEEKS NASA FUNDING FOR TWO PURPOSES: (1) TO LEVERAGE THE NSF FUNDING TO BUILD IN, FROM THE START, A DATA FRAMEWORK THAT IS OPTIMALLY SUITED TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY IN SUPPORT OF NASA SOLAR SPACE MISSIONS SUCH AS RHESSI, HINODE, SDO AND STEREO, AND (2) TO ENSURE THAT THE EXISTING OVSA DATABASE OF MORE THAN 1000 SOLAR FLARES AND DAILY OBSERVATIONS OF ACTIVE REGIONS TAKEN DURING SOLAR CYCLE 23 REMAINS ACCESSIBLE TO SCIENTISTS. THE NSF-FUNDED OVSA EXPANSION UTILIZES TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED FOR THE FUTURE FREQUENCY AGILE SOLAR RADIOTELESCOPE (FASR), AND WILL RESULT IN AN ENTIRELY NEW DATABASE WITH CONTINUOUS FREQUENCY COVERAGE OF HUNDREDS OF FREQUENCIES IN THE RANGE 1-18 GHZ, A FACTOR OF 4 INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF BASELINES FOR IMAGING, A DOUBLING OF SPATIAL RESOLUTION, SUB-SECOND TIME RESOLUTION, AND VASTLY IMPROVED DATA QUALITY THROUGH BETTER SENSITIVITY, STABILITY, AND APPROACH TO CALIBRATION. UNDER THIS PROPOSAL, WE SEEK NASA FUNDING TO SUPPORT COORDINATION OF THE SOFTWARE EFFORT WITH KEY EXPERTS IN DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NASA SOLAR DATABASES, SO THAT DATA FROM THE EXPANDED INSTRUMENT CAN BE WELL INTEGRATED INTO THE LARGER FRAMEWORK OF DATA SERVING THE NASA SOLAR COMMUNITY. IT IS EQUALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE TAKE STEPS NOW TO PREPARE THE EXISTING OVSA DATABASE AS A LEGACY DATABASE FOR SOLAR CYCLE 23. THE CURRENT CONFIGURATION OF OVSA HAS OPERATED SINCE THE YEAR 2000 AS A 5-7 ANTENNA SOLAR-DEDICATED RADIO INTERFEROMETER, WITH DAILY OBSERVATIONS AT TYPICALLY 40 FREQUENCIES IN THE MICROWAVE FREQUENCY RANGE, 1-18 GHZ. GIVEN THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE UNIQUE DATA FOR COMPLEMENTARY STUDIES WITH DATA TAKEN DURING THE SAME PERIOD BY YOHKOH, RHESSI, SOHO, TRACE, HINODE AND OTHER NASA SPACECRAFT, WE PROPOSE TO MAXIMIZE THEIR USEFULNESS AND LONGEVITY BY CREATING A UNIFORM, CALIBRATED OVSA LEGACY DATABASE AND COMMUNITY-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE, COMPATIBLE WITH THE RHESSI SOFTWARE PACKAGE. WITHOUT THE PROPOSED EFFORT, WE CAN ANTICIPATE THAT THE DATA WILL BE EFFECTIVELY LOST TO THE COMMUNITY OVER TIME DUE TO EROSION OF EXPERTISE AND OBSOLESCENCE OF THE CURRENT SOFTWARE; HENCE, THIS WILL BE OUR ONLY OPPORTUNITY TO PRESERVE THESE DATA AND ENSURE THEIR CONTINUED USE. WE PROPOSE TO CREATE METADATA FOR AN OVERVIEW OF THE DATABASE, CREATE A UNIFORM, SEARCHABLE DATABASE WITH WEB-SERVER ACCESS, AND AN IDL-BASED ONE-STOP USER INTERFACE TO SEARCH, DISPLAY, AND FURTHER ANALYZE THE DATA. THE RAW DATA WILL UNDERGO CALIBRATION AND QUALITY CONTROL, INCLUDING CORRECTION OF CLOCK ERRORS, ANTENNA POINTING, AND OTHER CORRECTABLE EFFECTS, AND WILL BE CONVERTED TO THE SAME FORMAT AS THE NEW DATA. THE RESULTING CALIBRATED DATABASE WILL BE ENCAPSULATED IN AN EASILY TRANSPORTABLE FORM SO THAT IT CAN BE MIGRATED TO NEW STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE, ENHANCING THE LONGEVITY OF THE DATA. THE FORMAT OF THE DATABASE FILE STRUCTURE AND NAMING CONVENTIONS WILL BE OPTIMIZED TO WORK WITH THE VIRTUAL SOLAR OBSERVATORY. WE ALSO PROPOSE SEVERAL SCIENCE INVESTIGATIONS WE WILL PERFORM WITH THE NEWLY CREATED, UNIFORM DATABASE, AS A WAY TO VERIFY ITS QUALITY AND COMPLETENESS, AND AS EXAMPLES OF ITS USE FOR DOCUMENTATION PURPOSES. - $38,000 - Friday the 10th of July 2015

THE MAIN GOAL IS TO ADVANCE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HOW A VARIETY OF CHROMOSPHERIC EVENTS ORIGINATE. THESE EVENTS INCLUDE SPICULES, RAPID BLUE SHIFTED EVENTS (OR SPICULES II), ANEMONE JETS AS WELL AS TINY INTERGRANULAR JETS RECENTLY DISCOVERED USING BBSO'S NST. IN PARTICULAR WE WILL CONSTRAIN THE DRIVING MECHANISMS OF CHROMOSPHERIC UPFLOWS. WE WILL ACHIEVE THIS GOAL BY ANALYZING HIGH RESOLUTION NST, HINODE, AND SDO DATA FOR CHS AND QUIET SUN AREAS. TASK 1. STUDIES OF CHROMOSPHERIC JET PROPERTIES (SUCH AS VELOCITIES, ASSOCIATION WITH THE MAGNETIC FIELD, TIME EVOLUTION) TASK 2. STUDIES OF CHROMOSPHERIC RESPONSE TO PHOTOSPHERIC DYNAMICS (E.G., BRIGHT POINT SUDDEN HORIZONTAL ACCELERATION, APPEARANCE/DISAPPEARANCE, COLLISION, ETC). TASK 3. ONE OF THE MAJOR GOALS OF THIS RESEARCH PLAN IS TO ORGANIZE SEVERAL JOINT CAMPAIGNS BETWEEN NST, HINODE AND SDO. WE BELIEVE THAT THESE JOINT OBSERVATIONS AND DATA ANALYSIS SHOULD BE ONE OF THE MAJOR STRENGTHS OF THE NASA LWS FOCUS SCIENCE TEAM (FST). THE NASA LWS SOLICITATION INTENDS TO FORM SCIENCE TEAMS FOCUSED ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC. THE POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION OF THE BBSO GROUP TO THE LWS FOCUSED SCIENCE TEAM WILL INCLUDE: 1) DATA SETS. THE FOCUSED TEAM JETS WILL MOST CERTAINLY BENEFIT FROM THESE UNIQUE DATA SETS PROVIDED BY THE LARGEST 1.6M OPEN APERTURE SOLAR TELESCOPE AT BBSO. 2) ORGANIZING JOINT CAMPAIGNS BETWEEN BBSO, HINODE AND OTHER OBSERVATORIES. 3) DATA ANALYSIS. BBSO GROUP WILL PERFORM DATA ANALYSIS AND THE RESULTS WILL POTENTIALLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE TEAM. FOR EXAMPLE, RESULTS OF STATISTICAL STUDIES OF OBSERVED MAGNETIC FIELDS CAN BE COMPARED TO THOSE DERIVED FROM SIMULATED MAGNETOGRAMS. SUCH COMPARATIVE STUDIES COULD LEAD TO A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT OF EXISTING MHD MODELS. THE PI AND CO-I OF THIS PROPOSAL HAVE THE VALUABLE EXPERIENCE OF HAVING PREVIOUSLY WORKED IN TWO SUCCESSFUL LWS TEAMS. WE EXPECT THAT NST DATA WILL ENABLE US TO SEE DETAILS ON THE SOLAR SURFACE WITH UNPRECEDENTED CLARITY. THUS, WE CAN EXPECT KNOWLEDGE THAT HAS ESCAPED US, BECAUSE OF LOWER RESOLUTION OF THE EXISTING DATA, TO BE REVEALED ON THE DYNAMICS OF SMALL-SCALE MAGNETIC FIELDS IN THE PHOTOSPHERE AND THE CHROMOSPHERE. OTHER BROAD IMPACT INCLUDES: I) NST DATA WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR SOLAR COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT FROM NASA WILL ENABLE US TO PERFORM OBSERVATIONS PER REQUESTS FROM OUTSIDE RESEARCHERS; II)EDUCATION AND OUTREACH. RECENT HIGH QUALITY NST DATA HAS ALREADY GENERATED SIGNIFICANT INTEREST AMONG GENERAL PUBLIC. - $36,539 - Friday the 10th of July 2015
