THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS, FIRST, TO DEVELOP A NEW COMPREHENSIVE 3 D MULTISPECIES KINETIC MODEL FOR THE NEUTRAL AND CHARGED PARTICLES THAT COMPRISE EUROPA'S NONEQUILIBRIUM ATMOSPHERE AND IONOSPHERE, SECOND, TO USE THIS MODEL TO STUDY THE COUPLING BETWEEN THE NEUTRALS AND PLASMA (CHARGE PARTICLES) THEREIN, AND THIRD, TO APPLY THE MODEL TO VARIOUS DATA. IT WILL BE ATTAINED BY EXTENDING AN EXISTING MULTISPECIES 2 D KINETIC MODEL TO 3 D AND INCORPORATING CHARGED PARTICLES. THE RESULTING KINETIC MODEL FOR THE PARTICLES AND ITS 2 D VERISON WILL THEN BE COMBINED WITH A WOLF-GLADROW TYPE MODEL FOR THE FIELDS AND APPLIED TO BASIC STUDIES FOR THE STRUCTURE, COMPOSITION, AND DYNAMICS OF EUROPA'S ATMOSPHERE AND IONOSPHERE. THERE WILL BE PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE NATURE OF THE INTERACTION OF THE MAGNETOSPHERIC PLASMA AND FIELDS WITH THE ATMOSPHERE AND ITS IMPLICATION FOR ESCAPE AND SURFACE CHEMISTRY. THE MODEL WILL ALSO BE UTILIZED IN THE SIMULATION OF SELECTED AND TO BE DETERMINED 0 UV (130.4 AND 135.6 NM) IMAGE EMISSION DATA AS WELL AS PLASMA SUBSYSTEM INSTRUMENT ION SPECTRA DATA FROM GALILEO EUROPA FLYBYS. THE PROPOSED MODEL IS A SUBSTANTIAL ADVANCE IN MODELING THAT RESPECTS THE SPATIAL NONUNIFORMITY AND NONEQUILIBRIUM CHARACTER OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND IONOSPHERE BY USING A 3 D KINETIC DESCRIPTION AND ACCOUNTS FOR THE STRONG COUPLING BETWEEN THE MAGNETOSPHERIC PLASMA AND FIELDS WITH THE ATMOSPHERE BY ACCOUNTING FOR THE MUTUAL EFFECTS OF THE FIELDS AND PARTICLES ON EACH OTHER. THIS PROJECT IS HIGHLY RELEVANT TO THE PLANETARY ATMOSPHERE PROGRAM IN THAT IT DIRECTLY AND CENTRALLY ADDRESSES THE DYNAMICS, ENERGETICS, AND CHEMICAL BEHAVIORS OF EUROPA'S ATMOSPHERE. IT IS ALSO HIGHLY RELEVANT TO NASA AS THE PROGRAM OF SCIENCE AND EXPLORATION OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM REQUIRES MODELING OF THE TARGETS AND RELEVANT DATA IN ORDER TO PLAN THE MISSIONS AND INTERPRET DATA.
