IGF::OT::IGF "OTHER FUNCTIONS" THIS STATEMENT OF WORK IS THE RESULT OF A PROPOSAL SUBMITTED BY PROSENSING, INC., FOR AWARD UNDER THE NASA HEADQUARTERS AERONAUTICS RESEARCH MISSION DIRECTORATE (ARMD) NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT (NRA) ENTITLED RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN AERONAUTICS 2011, AMENDMENT NO. 3, NNH11ZEA001N, RELEASED AUGUST 26, 2011. IN PREVIOUS RESEARCH PROSENSING INC. INVESTIGATED THE USE OF MULTI-FREQUENCY RADAR (MFR) FOR DETECTING AND MAPPING INFLIGHT-ICING CONDITIONS. THIS RESEARCH PROJECT WILL CONTINUE AND EXPAND THIS AIRBORNE HAZARD DETECTION RESEARCH TO INCLUDE SUPER-COOLED LARGE DROPLETS (SLD) AND RAIN ATTENUATED SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CELLS. CLOUD AND PRECIPITATION MODELS DEVELOPED AT PROSENSING WILL BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A GREATER VARIETY OF ATMOSPHERIC SCATTERERS AND THE SIMULATIONS WILL BE RE-TESTED FOR NEW COMBINATIONS OF MFR FREQUENCIES, BANDWIDTHS, WAVEFORMS AND OPERATING MODES THAT ARE BETTER SUITED FOR OPERATIONAL USE. PRIMARY OBJECTIVES WILL BE TO INVESTIGATE METHODS TO DETECT AND MEASURE HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS USING MFR AND COMPLIMENTARY TECHNIQUES; TO EXAMINE DESIGN OPTIONS USING THE LATEST COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE COMPONENTS AND PREDICT PERFORMANCE IN VARIOUS HAZARD CONDITIONS AND EXPLORE IMPORTANT MFR DESIGN OPTIONS; AND TO STUDY AND IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS AND CRITICAL ENABLING TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATED WITH APPLYING MFR TO IMPROVE FUTURE AIRBORNE WEATHER RADARS. SPECIFIC GOALS FOR THE RESEARCH FOLLOW: - INVESTIGATE THE HAZARD DETECTION AND MEASUREMENT METHODS AND CAPABILITIES FOR MFR; - DEVELOP A MULTI-FREQUENCY RADAR CONCEPT; - EXPLORE AND CATALOG THE PROJECTED ADVANCED CAPABILITIES FOR THE CONCEPT; - COMPARE AND CONTRAST ADVANTAGES VERSUS DISADVANTAGES OF THE CONCEPT, BOTH PRACTICAL AND TECHNICAL; AND - IDENTIFY POTENTIAL PROBLEMS, CRITICAL REQUIREMENTS, AND TECHNICAL CHALLENGES. A RADAR SYSTEM DESIGN CONCEPT IS CONSIDERED TO CONSIST OF THE TRANSMITTER/RECEIVER, THE ANTENNA SYSTEM, AND THE RADOME. THIS RESEARCH EFFORT WILL CONCENTRATE ON ADVANCEMENT OF THE TRANSMITTER/RECEIVER DESIGN FOR RADAR AND WILL GENERATE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ANTENNA SYSTEM AND RADOME. RESULTS ARE EXPECTED AS DATA, SOFTWARE, AND REPORTS, BOTH ORAL AND WRITTEN.
