RESEARCH EFFORT AWARDED UNDER A NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT. PROPOSAL TITLE: UNDERSTANDING SOLAR EUV VARIABILITY IN A 3"DIMENSKMAL HELIOSPHERE UNDER THIS CONTRACT, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PERFORM A THREE YEAR RESEARCH PLAN TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TEMPORAL VARIABILITY OF THE SOLAR EUV FLUX IN THREE DIMENSIONAL SPACE. THE BASIC MODEL THAT THIS EFFORT IS BUILT FROM, WAS DEVELOPED BASED ON THE SOHO/EIT OBSERVATIONS OF THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOLAR EUV FLUX. NOW WE INTEND TO EXPAND THIS WORK BY ADDING ADDITIONAL CAPABILITIES IDENTIFIED IN THE EARLIER WORK AND BY DEVELOPING THE BASIC MODEL INTO A MORE ADVANCED MODEL USING STEREO EUVI OBSERVATIONS TO GREATLY INCREASE THE TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL RESOLUTION. DUE TO THE UNIQUE ORBITS OF THE TWIN STEREO SPACECRAFT, THE STEREO OBSERVATIONS WILL ALSO GREATLY INCREASE THE COVERAGE OF THE SOLAR ATMOSPHERE FOR EACH SAMPLE PERIOD. ADDITIONALLY, FOR THE FIRST TIME, STEREO IMAGES WILL ALLOW US TO ESTABLISH ACCURATE CENTER-TO-LIMB VARIABILITY FROM MEASUREMENTS. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS PROPOSED WILL IMPROVE THE EXISTING MODEL SIGNIFICANTLY AND PROVIDE THE ACCURACY NEEDED TO ANSWER THE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF WHAT IS THE SOLAR CYCLE VARIABILITY OF THE EUV SPECTRAL IRRADIANCE FOR ALL OBSERVES THROUGHOUT THE 3-DIMENSIONAL HELIOSPHERE? WHAT IS THE SOLAR CYCLE VARIABILITY OF THE SPECTRAL LUMINOSITY? USING OUR TEAMS EARLIER WORK AS BACKGROUND, WE WILL DESCRIBE THE BASIC MODEL USING THE EIT DATA, THE CONCEPT OF THE DIFFERENTIAL EMISSION MEASURE (DEM) WHICH IS THE PHYSICAL BASIS FOR OUR MODEL, AND THE CALCULATION OF THE 3*DIMENSIONAL IRRADIANCE FROM DEM MAPS OF THE SUN. WE WILL THEN DESCRIBE THE ADVANCES THAT THE EUVI DATA WILL PROVIDE BEYOND THE ORIGINAL MODEL.
