GLOBAL CHANGE, CAUSED BY CLIMATE AND HUMAN SYSTEMS, IS ALTERING EARTH S LANDSCAPES AND WATER CYCLE. ONE MANIFESTATION OF THIS CHANGE IS THE DEWATERING OF ESTUARIES, WHICH IS CAUSED PRINCIPALLY BY HUMAN ALTERATION OF WATERSHEDS AND RIVER FLOWS. ESTUARIES ARE A TRANSITIONAL ZONE WHERE FRESHWATER MIXES WITH SALTWATER FROM THE SEA. CHANGES RESULTING FROM DEWATERING AFFECT THE TRANSPORTATION OF SUSPENDED SEDIMENTS, NUTRIENTS, AND ALLOCHTHONOUS ORGANIC MATTER. THESE CHANGES, COUPLED WITH ALTERED TIMING OF INFLOW EVENTS, AFFECT ESTUARINE PRODUCTIVITY AND THE VIABILITY OF HABITATS WITHIN AND ADJOINING THE ESTUARINE COMPLEX, INCLUDING MARSHES, SUBMERGED AQUATIC VEGETATION, AND OYSTER REEFS. NATURE HAS PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNE EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN TO UNDERSTAND HOW ESTUARINE SEDIMENTARY PROCESSES ARE CHANGING DUE TO DEWATERING. IN TEXAS THE MAJOR ESTUARIES (GALVESTON, MATAGORDA, AND CORPUS CHRISTI BAYS) EXIST ALONG A CLIMATE GRADIENT WHERE AVERAGE ANNUAL FRESHWATER INFLOW (NORMALIZED BY BAY VOLUME) DECREASES 10 FOLD FROM NORTH TO SOUTH. TO UNDERSTAND HOW THESE ESTUARIES WILL RESPOND TO GLOBAL CHANGE WE WILL EXPLOIT THIS GRADIENT ALONG THE TEXAS COAST AND CONDUCT A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THESE ESTUARIES SEDIMENTARY PROCESSES AND HOW THEY WILL CHANGE FROM DEWATERING. WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT AS DEWATERING CONTINUES SEDIMENTARY PROCESSES ON THE TEXAS COAST WILL SHIFT FROM INFLOW DOMINATED TO RESUSPENSION DOMINATED. OUR METHODOLOGY WILL INVOLVE SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING, A MAJOR FIELD CAMPAIGN, AND MODELING AND ANALYSES OF PHYSICAL PROCESSES AFFECTING ESTUARINE SEDIMENTARY PROCESSES. RESEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED OVER THE COURSE OF THREE YEARS AND IN THREE PHASES: 1) MAJOR FIELD CAMPAIGN WHERE CRUISES WILL BE CONDUCTED FOR THE COLLECTION OF IN-SITU DATA (BIOGEOCHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS, INHERENT OPTICAL PROPERTIES, AND APPARENT OPTICAL PROPERTIES), 2) DEVELOPMENT OF REGIONAL SATELLITE ALGORITHMS, AND 3) THE MODELING AND ANALYSIS OF A LONG-TERM DATA RECORD DERIVED FROM SATELLITE DATA. THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL DETERMINE HOW SUSPENDED SEDIMENTS IN THE SHALLOW-WATER ESTUARIES OF TEXAS RESPOND SPATIALLY AND TEMPORALLY TO CLIMATOLOGICAL AND HYDROLOGICAL DYNAMICS. WE WILL DETERMINE THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF THE VARIOUS CAUSES OF SUSPENDED SEDIMENT VARIABILITY, INCLUDING CONTRIBUTIONS BY RIVERS AND THE OCEAN, RESUSPENSION BY WAVES AND CURRENTS, AS WELL AS DREDGING AND FISHING ACTIVITIES WITHIN EACH AND AMONG ESTUARIES. THIS WORK WILL LEAD SOCIETY TO AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT ACTIONS ARE NEEDED TO ADAPT OR MITIGATE TO THESE CHANGES CAUSED BY GLOBAL CHANGE. HENCE, THE PROPOSED STUDY FULFILLS NASA S SCIENCE MISSION DIRECTORATE ENDEAVOR TO STUDY EARTH FROM SPACE AND ADVANCE SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING TO MEET SOCIETAL NEEDS. - $20,000 - Wednesday the 11th of July 2012
