THE PROJECT MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE CLEAR LAKE/GALVESTON (PMI-CLG) CHAPTER AND THE TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY (TAMU) ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY (ESET) PROGRAM HAVE DEVELOPED A VERY INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO A RECENT REQUEST FROM NASA FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT. THE TEAM HAS PROPOSED AN APPROACH THAT LEVERAGES ITS INDUSTRY EXPERTISE, CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT CAPABILITIES, AND THE ENERGY AND PASSION OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS TO ENGAGE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT AT AN EARLY STAGE IN THEIR LIVES. THIS EXCITING APPROACH EMPLOYS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROCESSES THAT ALLOW HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO DEVELOP TECHNICAL SKILLS IN AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING AND PROVIDING UNDERSTANDING OF THE VALUE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT TOOLS IN THEIR FUTURE CAREERS. THE APPROACH INCLUDES ENGAGING INDUSTRY EXPERTS TO SHOW THE STUDENTS POTENTIAL CAREER PATHS AVAILABLE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT. IN ADDITION THE HIGH SCHOOLS TEAMS WILL INTERACT WITH COLLEGE STUDENT MENTORS AND FACULTY ADVISORS WHO WILL INTRODUCE AND INTEGRATE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TOOLS AND PROCESSES INTO THEIR HUNCH PROJECTS. THE STUDENTS WILL GAIN EXPOSURE TO PROJECT MANAGEMENT TENETS, CONTACTS IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES AND MENTORS FOR THEIR PROJECT MANAGEMENT CAREERS. THROUGH THIS INNOVATIVE PROCESS, THE STUDENTS WILL PREPARE THEMSELVES TO SIT FOR THE PMI CERTIFIED ASSOCIATE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT (CAPM) TEST TO CERTIFY THE KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE GAINED. THIS APPROACH IS A CLEAR DEMONSTRATION OF NASA S CONTINUED DESIRE TO INVOLVE INDUSTRY, AND ACADEMIA IN SUPPORT OF EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH. THE PROPOSAL PROVIDES THE MATERIALS AND ACTIVITIES THAT CAN BE SUSTAINED THROUGH SUPPORT FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES. INDEED, PMI IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE TO PROVIDE FOR THE DISSEMINATION AND TRANSFER OF THE MODEL PROGRAM TO OTHER NASA CENTERS/EDUCATIONAL DISTRICTS. THE PMI-CLG/TAMU ESET TEAM IS EXCITED TO BE SHARING THE IMPORTANCE AND KNOWLEDGE OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT TO OUR NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS, TECHNOLOGISTS, ENGINEERS AND MATHEMATICIANS. - $74,046 - Wednesday the 5th of September 2012
