THE UNITED NEGRO COLLEGE FUND SPECIAL PROGRAMS CORPORATION (UNCFSP) IS PLEASED TO SUBMIT THIS PROPOSAL TO THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA) FOR CONTINUED ADMINISTRATION OFTHE NASA SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE FOR MINORITY INSTITUTIONS (NSTI). THIS PROPOSAL BUILDS ON EXPERIENCES GAINED OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS AND INTRODUCES MULTIPLE INNOVATIVE IDEAS TO ENHANCE THE NSTI MODEL, DEVELOP AND TRAIN UNDERREPRESENTED STUDENTS FOR CAREERS IN THE AEROSPACE INDUSTRIES, AND INCREASE THE RESEARCH CAPACITY OFMINORITY INSTITUTIONS (MIS). THE NSTI FURTHERS THE RESEARCH AGENDA OFTHE NASA AMES RESEARCH CENTER (ARC) BY INCORPORATING THE EXPERTISE OF OUR NATION'S MIS. BY ESTABLISHING STRATEGIC, MULTI-INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (R&D) PARTNERSHIPS UNDER THE DIRECTION OF/EAD NASA SCIENTISTS, THE NSTI AT THE NASA RESEARCH PARK (NRP) SERVES AS A CATALYST FOR INCREASING CONNECTIONS AND COLLABORATIONS AMONG GOVERNMENT, THE PRIVATE SECTOR, AND OTHER MAJORITY INSTITUTIONS AND RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL ASSOCIATIONS. THE NSTI PARTICIPANTS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE NRP, WORKING IN CONCERT WITH NASA AND OVER 40 COMPANIES AND 12 UNIVERSITIES ON EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INITIATIVES IN THE DISCIPLINES OFINFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, NANOTECHNOLOGY, LIFE SCIENCES, BIOTECHNOLOGY, SPACE TECHNOLOGY AND SPACE ENTREPRENEURSHIP. BY INTEGRATING MI RESEARCH TEAMS INTO ARC'S RESEARCH PROJECTS WHILE PROVIDING TRAINING IN R&D PROCESSES AND STRATEGIES, THE NSTI AIMS TO: STIMULATE CROSS-DISCIPLINARY RESEARCH; IMPROVE THE TRANSFER OF INFORMATION AND IDEAS; PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT OFMARKET-BASED TECHNOLOGIES; FOSTER TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES THAT WILL MOVE ADVANCES FROM SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY TO BASIC AND APPLIED TECHNOLOGY; AND ESTABLISH EDUCATIONAL FRAMEWORKS AND NETWORKS THAT WILL CONTINUE TO EXPAND THE NATION'S TALENT BASE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT. - $63,358 - Friday the 22nd of June 2012

UNCF SPECIAL PROGRAMS CORPORATION (UNCFSP) PROPOSES THE MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTIONS (MSIS) ASTROBIOLOGY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM (MAPP) TO ADMINISTER THE NASA ASTROBIOLOGY INSTITUTE (NAI) MINORITY INSTITUTION RESEARCH SUPPORT (MIRS) PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM SEEKS TO ADDRESS THE CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF MINORITY FACULTY IN STEM FIELDS IN THE UNITED STATES BY PROVIDING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR TALENTED MINORITY SERVING INSTITUTION (MSI) FACULTY TO PARTNER WITH ESTABLISHED ASTROBIOLOGY INVESTIGATORS AND FOSTER STUDENT INTEREST IN ASTROBIOLOGY AS A CAREER OPTION. FOR THIS EFFORT, UNCFSP WILL INCORPORATE A SERIES OF INTEGRATED COMPONENTS THAT EXPAND OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS THROUGH: A) FACULTY RESEARCH EXPERIENCES, B) FACULTY-STUDENT RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS, C) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING, AND D) INFORMATION EXCHANGES. THE GOALS OF THE PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS: - GOAL 1: INCREASE MSI FACULTY AND MINORITY STUDENT AWARENESS OF THE NAI MIRS PROGRAM - GOAL 2: INCREASE MSI FACULTY AND MINORITY STUDENT RECRUITMENT AND PARTICIPATION IN ASTROBIOLOGY AND RELATED OPPORTUNITIES. - GOAL 3: PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE FOR APPLICATION SUPPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, AND CAPACITY BUILDING. SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES USED TO MEET THE GOALS INCLUDE: - MSI ELECTRONIC COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NAI MIRS WEBSITE RECRUITMENT WEBINARS SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN ONLINE DATABASE/EMAIL BLAST NOTIFICATIONS - RECRUITMENT, APPLICATION, AND REVIEW PROCESS DEVELOPMENT FOR IDENTIFYING CAPABLE CANDIDATES - NAI MIRS FACULTY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM (MIRS-FFP) SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE MIRS FACULTY INCENTIVE AWARD, INCLUDING MANDATORY STUDENT PARTICIPATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE MIRS VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUM OPTIONAL: NAI FOCUS GROUP FACILITATION PROGRAM OUTCOMES INCLUDE PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR AT LEAST 12 FACULTY MEMBERS AND 24 STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN ASTROBIOLOGY RESEARCH.
