THE PARTICIPATING SCIENTIST WILL LEAD THE EFFORT IN OBSERVING, MAPPING AND INVESTIGATING THE IMPACT CRATER MORPHOLOGY RECORD ON VESTA. OBSERVATION PLANNING WILL EMPHASIZE INTEGRATION BETWEEN THE TWO MAIN REMOTE SENSING INSTRUMENTS (THE FRAMING CAMERA [FC] AND THE VIR VISIBLE AND INFRARED MAPPING CAMERA) TO ENHANCE OVERALL SCIENTIFIC RESULTS RELATING TO IMPACT CRATERING (FOCUSING ALSO ON DISTINCTIVE AND DIAGNOSTIC IMPACT CRATERS IDENTIFIED IN LOW RESOLUTION APPROACH AND SURVEY ORBIT MAPPING), THE CREATION OF NEW DERIVED DATA SETS (PRINCIPALLY HIGH RESOLUTION TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPING USING MULTIPLE TECHNIQUES), DATA ANALYSIS AND COMPREHENSIVE SURVEY OF IMPACT RELATED PHENOMENA ON A LARGE ASTEROID, AND THE DISSEMINATION OF SPECIAL DATA PRODUCTS AND IMPACT CRATER OBSERVATIONS TO THE PUBLIC IN THE FORM OF PEER-REVIEWED SURVEY PAPERS AND ON-HNE REPORTS. THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATIONS WILL FOCUS ON IMPACT CRATERING AND ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING MISSION-LEVEL OBJECTIVES: DETERMINE THE EVOLUTION OF VESTA; CHARACTERIZE THE SHAPE AND TOPOGRAPHY OF VESTA; AND IDENTIFY, MAP AND CHARACTERIZE GEOLOGICAL AND CRATERING PROCESSES. THESE OBJECTIVES ARE ADDRESSED BY TAKING ADVANTAGE OF VESTA S UNIQUE CHARACTER. VESTA IS THE FIRST REPRESENTATIVE OF ROCKY, OR SILICATE, BODIES OF SIZE AND SURFACE GRAVITY INTERMEDIATE BETWEEN THE MOON AND THE SMALLER ASTEROIDS SUCH AS GASPRA, IDA AND EROS THAT WILL BE EXPLORED BY SPACECRAFT. VESTA (AND SUBSEQUENTLY CERES) WILL BE THE FIRST ASTEROIDS EXPLORED TO HAVE COMPLEX CRATER MORPHOLOGIES, AND WILL CONSTITUTE A KEY TEST OF THE INVERSE-GRAVITY SCALING OF IMPACT CRATER MODIFICATION (I.E., FORMATION OF TERRACES AND CENTRAL PEAKS). THIS SCALING IS ALSO CONTROLLED BY SURFACE COMPOSITION AND COMPARISON OF CRATERS ON VESTA AND CERES WILL HELP CONSTRAIN WHETHER CERES## MANTLE AND CRUST ARE ICE-RICH. THE MORPHOLOGY AND STRUCTURE OF VESTA##S VERY LARGE SOUTH POLAR IMPACT BASIN WILL BE MAPPED AND COMPARED WITH SIMILAR SIZED BASINS ON MIDSIZE ICY SATELLITES TO DETERMINE WHAT COLLAPSE PROCESSES FORMED THIS BASIN, AND HOW THEY DIFFER ON ROCKY AND ICY WORLDS. A SEARCH WILL BE CONDUCTED FOR GLOBAL EFFECTS OF THIS AND OTHER POSSIBLE LARGE BASINS, RANGING FROM ANTIPODAL SEISMIC DISRUPTION OF TERRAINS TO RADIAL FRACTURES AND CONCENTRIC COMPRESSION RIDGES, ALL OF WHICH HAVE BEEN OBSERVED ON OTHER PLANETARY PLANETS AND SATELLITES. SOME OF THESE EFFECTS ARE CONTROLLED BY INTERIOR STRUCTURE AND HENCE CAN BE USED TO PROBE VESTA##S INTERIOR. THE DEGREE TO WHICH CRATER RELAXATION MAY HAVE OCCURRED WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED TO DETERMINE IF HIGH HEAT FLOW HAS LEFT A SIGNATURE ON THE SURFACE. EJECTA DEPOSITS WILL ALSO BE MAPPED BOTH PHYSICALLY AND COMPOSITIONALLY TO DETERMINE WHETHER VESTA##S UPPER CRUST IS LAYERED, IN CASES WHERE CRATERS HAVE EXCAVATED MATERIAL FROM DEPTH AND DEPOSITED IT ON LAYERS OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITION. THESE INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING GLOBAL FC IMAGING AT 60 TO 260 M AND TARGETED HIGH (-10 M) RESOLUTION AND MULTISPECTRAL IMAGING USING BOTH FC AND (AT 200-1000 M RESOLUTION) VIR COORDINATED BY THE INVESTIGATOR, TOGETHER WITH HIGH RESOLUTION TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS PRODUCED BY THE INVESTIGATOR FROM STEREO AND LOW-SUN IMAGING. CRATER MORPHOLOGY IS CONTROLLED BY BOTH SURFACE GRAVITY AND CRUSTAL COMPOSITION. THE CHARACTERIZATION AND MAPPING OF IMPACT CRATER MORPHOLOGIES ON VESTA, WHICH IS LIKELY ROCKY WITH LITTLE WATER ICE, WILL BE A KEY COMPONENT OF DAWN MISSION OBJECTIVES AT VESTA, ESPECIALLY FOR LATER COMPARISON WITH CERES. WHETHER CERES HAS A DIFFERENTIATED WATER ICE MANTLE MAY BE REVEALED OR CONFIRMED BY FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES IN IMPACT CRATER MORPHOLOGY, AS HAS ALREADY BEEN DEMONSTRATED BY STUDY OF IMPACT CRATER MORPHOLOGIES ON ICY SATELLITES. CRATERS ON THOSE BODIES, INCLUDING LARGE BASINS SIMILAR IN SIZE TO VESTA##S LARGE BASIN, WILL SERVE AS BENCHMARKS FOR COMPARISON WITH THOSE ON VESTA (AND FOR COMPARISON LATER IN THE MISSION WITH ICY CERES). - $90,000 - Monday the 6th of August 2012

WE PROPOSE ANALYSES OF AURA AND SCISAT SATELLITE DATA AND GLOBAL MODELING INITIATIVE (GMI) SIMULATIONS THAT WILL INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF STRATOSPHERIC TRANSPORT PROCESSES AND REDUCE THE UNCERTAINTIES IN PREDICTIONS OF THE STRATOSPHERIC OZONE RESPONSE TO CHANGES IN ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION. THIS PROPOSAL IS RELEVANT TO MAP BECAUSE IT ADDRESSES IMPROVEMENT OF OUR ABILITY TO PREDICT FUTURE CHANGES TO THE EARTH SYSTEM THROUGH MODELING AND THE ANALYSIS OF SATELLITE DATA. ITS GOALS INCLUDE UNDERSTANDING PROCESSES THAT CONTROL THE CHEMICAL AND RADIATIVE BALANCE OFTHE UT/LS AND UNDERSTANDING HOW STRATOSPHERIC PROCESSES AFFECT CLIMATE. THE STUDIES FALL BROADLY INTO TWO CATEGORIES: SATELLITE TRACE GAS DATA ANALYSES, AND CHEMISTRY AND TRANSPORT MODEL (CTM) EXPERIMENTS. THE SATELLITE DATA ANALYSES ,",,'ILL INVESTIGATE I) MASS EXCHANGE BETWEEN THE TROPICAL UPPER TROPOSPHERE/LOWER STRATOSPHERE AND THE EXTRATROPICS, 2) CROSS-TROPOPAUSE TRANSPORT FROM THE LOWERMOST STRATOSPHERE, AND 3) MIXING INTO THE TROPICAL PIPE, ITS INTERANNUAL AND QBO VARIATIONS, AND HOW THESE PROCESSES ARE CONNECTED TO POLAR COMPOSITION. THE CTM EXPERIMENTS ARE MULTI-YEAR INTEGRATIONS OF THE GMI CTM WITH (,COMBOI. CHEMISTRY USING BOTH GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL AND ASSIMILATED METEOROLOGICAL FIELDS. MODEL ANALYSES WILL ADDRESS ISSUES SUCH AS RESOLUTION REQUIREMENTS FOR REALISTIC REPRESENTATION OF VARIOUS ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSES. THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPORTANT PROCESSES THAT WE GAIN FROM SATELLITE DATA ANALYSES WILL BE USED TO EVALUATE THE REPRESENTATION OF THOSE PROCESSES IN GMI SIMULATIONS. GMI WILL INTEGRATE A MULTI-DECADAL TROPOSPHERIC (,HINDCASTI. EXPERIMENT THAT SUPPORTS ICAC ATMOSPHERIC CHEMISTRY AND CLIMATE MODELING ACTIVITIES. THE PURPOSE OF THE HINDCAST IS TO DETERMINE IF WE UNDERSTAND THE PROCESSES CONTROLLING THE OBSERVED CHANGES IN TROPOSPHERIC COMPOSITION, ESPECIALLY 03, DURING THE LATE 20TH CENTURY. WE WILL EVALUATE LONG-TERM BEHA'IOR OF LOWER STRATOSPHERIC 03 IN A GMI-COMBO HINDCAST SIMULATION (,GML~MERRAI.).THE EVALUATION WILL USE EXISTING DIAGNOSTICS OF UT/LS TRANSPORT, LONG-TERM 03 DATA SETS, AND SATELLITE AND AIRCRAFT CAMPAIGN 03 AND TRACE GAS DATA FROM 1987 TO THE PRESENT. THE FOCUS OFTHE GMI-MERRA EVALUATION WILL BE TO ASSESS THE CREDIBILITY OF ITS LONG-TERM 03 SIMULATION WITH REGARD TO TREND ANALYSES AND TRANSPORT OF STRATOSPHERIC OZONE TO THE TROPOSPHERE. WE HAVE REACHED A POINT IN THE EVALUATION OF MODELS WHERE WE MUST ASK WHETHER OUR USE OF THE DIAGNOSTICS IS TELLING US WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW. THAT IS, DO THE DIAGNOSTICS DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE MODELS BASED ON THEIR PHYSICAL BEHAVIOR? ARE THESE DIAGNOSTICS HELPING TO REDUCE THE UNCERTAINTIES IN CHEMISTRY-CLIMATE SIMULATIONS? WE WILL INVESTIGATE HOW TO JUDICIOUSLY APPLY THE DIAGNOSTICS WE HAVE, AND IDENTIFY AND PRIORITIZE PROCESSES REQUIRED FOR A CREDIBLE SIMULATION. THE GOAL IS TO DEVELOP AN INTEGRATED EVALUATION OF STRATOSPHERIC TRANSPORT IN CHEMISTRY CLIMATE MODELS.
