NASA SHARED SERVICES CENTER
NEW RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN NASA-DRYDEN AND COD (2-YEAR COLLEGE WITH 52% HISPANIC ENROLLMENT) WILL BE ESTABLISHED. EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN NASA-DRYDEN AND CSUSB (HSI 4-YEAR COLLEGE) WILL BE STRENGTHENED AND EXPANDED UPON. THESE NASA LINKS WILL BE USED TO STRENGTHEN SPECIFIC SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) PROGRAMS AT CSUSB AND COD BY A COHERENT APPROACH INCLUDING AUGMENTATION OF CURRENT CURRICULA, DEVELOPMENT OF COMPLETELY NEW CURRICULA THAT REFLECT NEW IDEAS IN SCIENTIFIC THOUGHT, CUTTING EDGE RESEARCH, AND MODERN EDUCATIONAL METHODS. ADDITIONALLY, A MORE SEAMLESS TRANSITION FROM COD TO CSUSB FOR STEM STUDENTS WILL BE ESTABLISHED. AN INNOVATIVE FOUR-WEEK INTENSIVE ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE WILL INSPIRE, MOTIVATE, EXCITE AND INCREASE THE CONFIDENCE OF AT LEAST 24 TWO-YEAR COLLEGE STUDENTS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME MAKING THEM MORE COMPETITIVE FOR NATIONAL STUDENT CO-OP/INTERNSHIP/RESEARCH PROGRAMS SUCH AS NASA-MUST OR NASA-USRP. THE ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCE WILL OCCUR OVER THE WINTER BREAK, COINCIDING WITH APPLICATION AVAILABILITY FOR MOST OF THESE NATIONAL PROGRAMS AND STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE INTERSESSION PROGRAM WILL APPLY FOR AT LEAST THREE PROGRAMS. THIS SYNERGY OF STUDENT EXPERIENCE, FACULTY INVOLVEMENT AND STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN THE ENRICHMENT AND APPLICATION TO EXTERNAL PROGRAMS IS A KEY PART OF THE SUCCESS OF THIS PROPOSAL. FROM THE INTERSESSION EXPERIENCE TWO STUDENTS WILL BE SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER RESEARCH AT NASA DRYDEN WITH, DR., AND (NASA-DRYDEN TECHNICAL ADVISOR). THE STUDENTS AND DR. WILL EXPERIENCE THE NASA CULTURE, AND LEARN FIRSTHAND WHAT SKILL SETS ARE IMMEDIATELY PUT TO WORK AND WHAT ABILITIES SUSTAIN NASA EMPLOYEES THROUGHOUT THEIR CARRIERS. AT LEAST TWO ADDITIONAL STUDENTS WILL BE SUPPORTED DURING THE SUMMER AT CSUSB CONDUCTING NASA RELATED RESEARCH. ONE NEW COURSE WILL BE CREATED AND SIX COURSES WILL BE REVISED TO EXPAND MATERIALS SCIENCE CONTENT IN THE CURRICULUM. MATERIALS ARE CRITICAL TO MOST NASA PROGRAMS AND MISSIONS. THE STUDY OF MATERIALS IS A PROGRESSIVE SUBJECT AND PERVASIVE IN ITS APPLICATION; IT OFFERS MANY EXCITING AND COMPELLING EDUCATIONAL, ACADEMIC AND SCIENTIFIC OPPORTUNITIES WHILE REQUIRING A DIVERSE STEM BACKGROUND. THIS NEW APPROACH WILL REQUIRE CHANGES THAT WILL RIPPLE THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM. WE WILL DEVELOP A NEW BOTTOM-UP APPROACH TO TEACHING MATERIALS, LEVERAGING NEW ADVANCES IN NANOTECHNOLOGY, DENSITY FUNCTIONAL THEORY (DFT) AND COMPUTATIONAL METHODS. THIS REQUIRES STUDENTS TO HAVE SOME PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF QUANTUM PHYSICS. CONSEQUENTLY, WE PROPOSE CURRICULUM CHANGES TO THE PRE ENGINEERING COURSES (SUCH AS INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRONICS), ENGINEERING PHYSICS SEQUENCES SUCH AS THE ONES OFFERED AT BOTH CSUSB AND COD, AND MODIFICATION OF THE MATERIALS COURSE AT CSUSB (PHYSICS 318) AND THE CORRESPONDING MATERIALS COURSE AT COD. MATERIALS IS A REQUIRED COURSE FOR CSUSB'S APPLIED PHYSICS AND THE NEW COMPUTER ENGINEERING MAJOR. IN ADDITION, IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PEER INSTRUCTION MODELS AND A BROAD STUDY OF PHYSICS TEACHING METHODS WILL BE UNDERTAKEN IN THE INTRODUCTORY PHYSICS COURSES FOR K-12 TEACHERS.
