THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH IS TO ADD CUMULUS PARAMETERIZATION TO THE BULK CLOUD-MICROPHYSICS SCHEME THAT WAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED FOR JUPITER. THE NEW MODEL WILL HELP US TO INVESTIGATE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH MOIST CONVECTION. IT HAS BEEN FREQUENTLY PROPOSED THAT LOCAL CONVECTIVE STORMS PROVIDE THE ENERGY SOURCE THAT MAINTAINS JUPITER'S LONG-LIVED JETS. THERE IS A REPEATED APPEARANCE OF A LARGE CONVECTIVE WATER STORM IN THE FILAMENTARY REGION TO THE NORTHWEST OF THE GREAT RED SPOT (GRS) THAT SEEMS TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DYNAMICS OF THE GRS ENVIRONMENT AND THE NEIGHBORING TURBULENT ZONE. THE PLANET IS ABUNDANT WITH SIMILAR CONVECTIVE FEATURES, ESPECIALLY IN THE CYCLONIC REGIONS. OUR PREVIOUS RESULTS INDICATE THAT LARGE SCALE CONVECTION AS A RESULT OF STRATIFORM CLOUD FORMATION CANNOT PRODUCE STRONG ENOUGH UPDRAFTS THAT CAPABLE OF PENETRATING THROUGH THE STABLE LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE. THE MISSING PIECE OF THE PUZZLE CAN BE THE THE MOIST CONVECTION THAT CAN GENERATE UPDRAFTS WITH VERTICAL VELOCITIES OF 50-100 M/S ON JUPITER THAT WOULD ALLOW WATER CLOUDS TO RISE ABOVE THE VISIBLE CLOUD DECK, CONSISTENT WITH OBSERVATIONS. IN OUR PROPOSED WORK WE WILL MODEL THOSE CONVECTIVE PLUMES USING THE EPIC GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL, THAT IS PROVEN TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN SIMULATING DYNAMICAL FEATURES OF JUPITER'S ATMOSPHERE. THE RESULTING MODEL WILL ENHANCE OUR CAPABILITY OF MORE REALISTIC MODELING OF MOIST PHENOMENA COUPLED WITH THE LARGE-SCALE CIRCULATION OF THE PLANET. OBSERVATIONAL DATA WILL BE USED TO CONSTRAIN THE INITIAL STATE OF OUR EXPERIMENTS. WE WILL INVESTIGATE THE VERTICAL TRANSPORT OF CONDENSABLES, THE MERIDIONAL CIRCULATION OF THE PLANET, AND WE WILL QUANTIFY THE EFFECTS OF MOIST CONVECTIVE STORMS ON THE STRENGTH AND SHAPE OF THE JETS. THE RESULTING CONVECTION SCHEME WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE EPIC SOURCE CODE AND WILL BE FREELY DOWNLOADABLE FROM NASA'S PDS ATMOSPHERES NODE. - $64,980 - Monday the 16th of July 2012
