THE CRIS SENSOR ON NPP CONTINUES THE INFRARED HYPERSPECTRAL RADIANCE RECORD BEGUN BY THE AIRS SENSOR ON THE EOS-AQUA SENSOR PLATFORM. INFRARED RADIANCES CONTAIN A HOST OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, INCLUDING: TEMPERATURE AND WATER VAPOR PROFILES, CLOUD CHARACTERISTICS, A NUMBER OF MINOR GASES INCLUDING CO2, CH4, N2O, CO, HDO, AND NH3, AND DUST AEROSOLS. ONE OF THE DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS OF AIRS IS ITS TREMENDOUS RADIOMETRIC STABILITY, NOW ESTIMATED TO BE ON THE ORDER OF 0.002K/YEAR OR BETTER, NOW OVER ALMOST EIGHT YEARS OF OPERATION. WE PROPOSE TO CALIBRATE AND VALIDATE THE CRIS SENSOR RECORDS (SDR AND EDRS) IN ORDER TO EXTEND THIS TIME SERIES INTO THE NPP+ TIME FRAME. WE WILL PROVIDE AND END-TO-END ANALYSIS OF THE CRIS EDR PRODUCTION ACCURACIES BY SYSTEMATICALLY VALIDATING THE CRIS SDR, INTERMEDIATE CLOUD-CLEARED RADIANCE PRODUCT, AND FINAL EDR RESULTS, IN THAT ORDER. THIS END-TO-END VIEW IS VITAL IN ORDER TO REACH CDR ACCURACIES IN THE EDR PRODUCTS. IN ADDITION TO VALIDATION, WE ALSO PROPOSE TO PROVIDE IN-FLIGHT FREQUENCY CALIBRATION OF THE CRIS SENSOR. LONGER TERM ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO EVALUATING POTENTIAL OFFSETS BETWEEN THE CRIS EDR RECORD AND THE AIRS LEVEL 2 RECORD IN PREPARATION FOR CREATED AN ATMOSPHERIC PROFILE CDR. THE PROCEDURES USED FOR THIS VALIDATION HAVE BEEN USED EXTENSIVELY ON AIRS AND ON COMPARISONS OF AIRS TO THE IASI SENSOR FLYING ON METOP IN THE 9:30 ORBIT. - $96,172 - Friday the 20th of November 2015

THIS INVESTIGATION WILL HELP TOWARDS THE FULLEST POSSIBLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE DENSITY STRUCTURE OF THE MARTIAN CRUST AND POLAR LAYERED DEPOSITS BY OPTIMALLY RESOLVING THE GEOPOTENTIAL MODEL FROM RADIO TRACKING DATA. WE WILL USE LUMPED HARMONIC REPRESENTATION WHICH YIELDS REGIONALLY-CONCENTRATED ORTHOGONAL BASIS FUNCTIONS SUCH AS SPHERICAL SLEPIAN FUNCTIONS AND SPHERICAL RADIAL BASIS (OR SPHERICAL WAVELET) FUNCTIONS, INSTEAD OF REPRESENTING THE GRAVITY FIELDS AS NON-LOCALIZED SPHERICAL HARMONIC FUNCTIONS. THESE NEW REPRESENTATIONS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY USED FOR REGIONAL GRAVITY ANALYSIS ON THE EARTH WITH IMPROVED RESOLUTION AND ACCURACY (FOR EXAMPLE, FROM GRACE DATA) AND ALSO FOR IMPROVED REGIONAL GRAVITY FIELDS ON THE MOON FROM LUNAR PROSPECTOR. THE MARS GLOBAL GRAVITY FIELD WILL BE CONSTRUCTED WITH OPTIMAL SPECTRAL CONSTRAINT BY EXPLOITING LOW ALTITUDE DATA AND DENSELY COVERED DATA OVER THE POLAR REGION. THE OPTIMAL CONSTRAINT WOULD STABILIZE THE GLOBAL SOLUTIONS WITHOUT AFFECTING THE PEAK GRAVITY SIGNALS STEMMING FROM THE THARSIS PROVINCE FOR EXAMPLE. THE REGIONAL REFINEMENT OF THE GRAVITY SOLUTIONS WILL BE PERFORMED BY INVERTING THE LINE-OF-SIGHT (LOS) ACCELERATION RESIDUALS. THE DENSITY ANOMALY OF THE VOLCANIC CORES WILL BE ESTIMATED DIRECTLY FROM THE ANALYSIS OF LOS RESIDUAL DATA BY IMPLEMENTING THE GRAVITATIONAL ACCELERATION OF THE UNIFORM-DENSITY POLYHEDRON FEATURE. THE IMPROVED GRAVITY ANALYSIS IS ONE OF THE HIGH-PRIORITY TOPICS IN THE MARS DATA ANALYSIS PROGRAM. THE RESULTS OF THIS INVESTIGATION WILL OFFER THE MOST ACCURATE PICTURE TO AID IN UNDERSTANDING THE MARS SURFACE AND INTERIOR FROM THE COMBINED ANALYSIS WITH TOPOGRAPHY DATA. - $89,984 - Friday the 10th of July 2015

WE SHALL USE MOSST_DAS, THE FIRST GEOMAGNETIC DATA ASSIMILATION FRAMEWORK DEVELOPED IN NASA GSFC, FOR THE PROPOSED RESEARCH. IN PARTICULAR, WE SHALL FOCUS ON THE FOLLOWING FOUR RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: (1) WE WILL EXAMINE THE IMPACT OF SHORT TIME SCALE CORE FLOW ON THE NEAR-EQUATOR GEOMAGNETIC SPOTS BY ASSIMILATIONS WITH DIFFERENT MAGNETIC ROSSBY NUMBERS (THAT MEASURE THE FLUID INERTIA RELATIVE TO THE CORIOLIS FORCE) THAT CONTROL THE FAST CORE FLOW TIME SCALES (E.G. TORSIONAL OSCILLATIONS). (2) WE WILL UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF CMB PROPERTIES ON THE NEAR-EQUATOR GEOMAGNETIC SPOTS BY ASSIMILATIONS WITH DIFFERENT ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTING D -LAYERS ABOVE THE CMB, WITH AND WITHOUT THERMAL CMB HETEROGENEITY. (3) WE WILL ASSESS THE GEODYNAMO ENERGY BUDGET FROM THE NEAR-EQUATOR GEOMAGNETIC SPOTS BY ASSIMILATIONS WITH DIFFERENT RAYLEIGH NUMBERS (THAT MEASURE THE BUOYANCY FORCE RELATIVE TO THE CORIOLIS FORCE IN THE CORE). (4) WE WILL USE THE RESULTS OF (1)-(3) TO IMPROVE THE CORE DYNAMICAL STATE ESTIMATES AND THE PREDICTION OF SMALL SCALE AND RAPIDLY VARYING SV IN THE FUTURE. - $802,887 - Monday the 26th of June 2017

WE PROPOSE TO CONTINUE A PROGRAM OF HUNTING FOR NEW MEMBERS OF THE RARE GAMMA-RAY BINARY CLASS OF OBJECTS BY LOOKING FOR PERIODIC MODULATION OF LAT LIGHT CURVES. WE HAVE ALREADY DEVELOPED TECHNIQUES FOR CREATING "WEIGHTED PHOTON" LIGHT CURVES AND EXPOSURE-WEIGHTED POWER SPECTRA WHICH ENABLE US TO OBTAIN HIGH SIGNAL-TO-NOISE LIGHT CURVES AND SEARCH FOR SHORT ORBITAL PERIODS. WE WILL CONTINUE TO DEVELOP OUR TECHNIQUES, PERFORM SEARCHES ON THE INCREASING AMOUNT OF DATA AVAILABLE, AND PERFORM FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATIONS OF ANY CANDIDATES FOUND. THIS PROGRAM HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN THE DISCOVERY OF ONE DEFINITE NEW BINARY, 1FGL J1018.6-5856, AND AT LEAST ONE OTHER CANDIDATE. - $70,637 - Monday the 10th of August 2015
