ACROSS SOUTHERN ALASKA THE NORTHWEST DIRECTED MOTION OF THE PACIFIC PLATE IS ACCOMPANIED BY MIGRATION AND COLLISION OF THE YAKUTAT TERRANE TO CONTINENTAL ALASKA. THE NATURE AND MAGNITUDE OF THIS TRANSLATION AND ACCRETION ON UPPER CRUSTAL FAULTS AND FOLDS IS POORLY CONSTRAINED DUE TO COMPLEX VARIATIONS IN THE STYLE OF TECTONIC DEFORMATION, PERVASIVE AND CHANGING GLACIATION, AND LOGISTICAL CHALLENGES OF CONDUCTING FIELD STUDIES IN FORMIDABLE TOPOGRAPHY. HERE, WE PROPOSE TO ANALYZE NEW HIGH-RESOLUTION LIDAR DATA TO EXTRACT LOCATIONS, GEOMETRY, AND HEIGHTS OF SEISMOGENIC FAULTS AND ZONES OF ACTIVE FOLDING ACROSS THE MALASPINA-SEWARD-BAGLEY REGION OF SOUTHERN ALASKA PLATE BOUNDARY THAT IS HYPOTHESIZED TO ACCOMMODATE UPPER CRUSTAL SHORTENING AND RIGHT-LATERAL SLIP. ADDITIONALLY, WE PROPOSE TO USE THE MORPHOLOGY AND DYNAMICS OF GLACIERS DERIVED FROM L-BAND SAR ICE VELOCITIES TO INFER THE LARGE SCALE SUB-ICE STRUCTURES THAT FORM THE STRUCTURAL FRAMEWORK OF THE SEWARD-BAGLEY BASINS. SECONDLY, WE WILL USE HIGH RESOLUTION LIDAR TO QUANTIFY THE SPATIAL EXTENT AND VARIATIONS IN ELEVATIONS OF COASTAL TERRACES. THEN, BY USING NUMERICAL MODEL PREDICTIONS, WE WILL DISTINGUISH BETWEEN RECENT ELEVATION CHANGES ASSOCIATED WITH EARTHQUAKES AND TECTONIC UPLIFT AND SOLID EARTH CHANGES DUE TO GLACIAL FLUCTUATIONS. TO ACHIEVE EARTHSCOPE AND NASA EARTH SURFACE INTERIOR OBJECTIVES WE WILL EXPLOIT GEODETIC IMAGING TO (1) ESTIMATE THE NATURE AND AMOUNT OF SLIP ON UPPER CRUSTAL FAULTS AND FOLDS AND USE THESE RESULTS TO ADDRESS THE IMPLICATIONS FOR EARTHQUAKE HAZARD IN SOUTHERN ALASKA AND (2) QUANTIFY THE SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL VARIATIONS IN THE LONG-TERM UPLIFT RATE FROM MARINE TERRACE HEIGHTS AND EXPLORE LINKAGES BETWEEN TECTONICS AND GLACIAL FLUCTUATIONS. ALSO, THE RESULTS OF OUR STUDY WILL PROMOTE THE NASA STRATEGIC GOAL (3A) TO STUDY EARTH FROM SPACE TO ADVANCE SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING BY EXPANDING THE APPLICATIONS FOR SATELLITE MULTI-BEAM LIDAR AND INSAR OBSERVATIONS.

ABSTRACT: UNCERTAINTIES IN CLOUD FEEDBACKS WITHIN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM ARE LINKED FUNDAMENTALLY TO A DEFICIT OF KNOWLEDGE REGARDING RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ATMOSPHERIC DYNAMICS, THE VERTICAL PROFILES OF HYDROMETEOR MICROPHYSICS, AND THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES THAT COUPLE THEM. THE ATMOSPHERIC RADIATIVE HEATING VERTICAL STRUCTURE AND THE LATENT HEAT RELEASE THROUGH PRODUCTION OF PRECIPITATION WITHIN ATMOSPHERIC COLUMNS (I.E. THE FORCING) ARE THE PRIMARY MECHANISMS FOR THIS FEEDBACK. KNOWLEDGE OF THE VERTICAL PROFILES OF MICROPHYSICS, WHILE NOT SUFFICIENT, IS NECESSARY FOR UNDERSTANDING THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES THAT COUPLE THE FORCING AND THE FEEDBACK. THE ADDITION OF CLOUDSAT AND CALIPSO TO THE PASSIVE SENSORS OF A-TRAIN HAS ALLOWED US TO ILLUSTRATE THESE CONCEPTS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF DATA PRODUCTS, EXPERIMENTAL ALGORITHMS, AND INITIAL RESEARCH RESULTS THAT ADDRESS QUESTIONS OF RADIATIVE FORCING BY DIFFERENT GENRE OF HYDRO METEORS. WE SEEK TO CONTINUE AND EXTEND THE SCIENTIFIC FOCUS OF OUR A-TRAIN RESEARCH ACTIVITIES WITH THIS PROPOSAL. USING DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES AND CLOUD PROCESS MODELING, WE PROPOSE TO ADDRESS A SET OF SCIENCE QUESTIONS MOTIVATED BY CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN CLOUD PHENOMENOLOGY: 1. HOW IS CIRRUS STRUCTURE (I.E. THE VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF MICROPHYSICS) RELATED TO THE LARGE-SCALE ENVIRONMENT? AND HOW DOES THIS STRUCTURE INFLUENCE THE WATER AND ENERGY BUDGETS OF THE UPPER TROPOSPHERE? 2. HOW DO CIRRUS ANVILS EVOLVE OVER A PERIOD OF HOURS WHEN THEY SOMETIMES BECOME SELF-MAINTAINING ENTITIES THAT PERSIST MUCH LONGER THAN SIMPLE SEDIMENTATION OF ANVIL INJECTA? 3. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF DRIZZLE IN MODULATING THE MORPHOLOGY OF BOUNDARY LAYER STRATOCUMULUS CLOUDS? ADDRESSING THESE QUESTIONS REQUIRES SOPHISTICATED DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS THAT INCLUDE METEOROLOGICAL REANALYSES, GEOSTATIONARY SATELLITE IMAGERY, AND CLOUD PROPERTY RETRIEVALS. WE PROPOSE DEVELOPMENT OF AN INCREASINGLY SOPHISTICATED SUITE OF RETRIEVAL ALGORITHMS THAT ARE CAPABLE OF USING THE FULL COMPLEMENT OF A-TRAIN SENSORS. IN PARTICULAR, THESE ALGORITHMS WILL BE DESIGNED FOR SIMULTANEOUS RETRIEVAL OF CLOUD PROPERTIES AND LIGHT PRECIPITATION CHARACTERISTICS WITH RIGOROUS ESTIMATES OF UNCERTAINTY.
