IGF::OT::IGF THE CURRENT GOLD STANDARD METHOD FOR MEASURING INTRACRANIAL PRESSURE IS TO PERFROM A LUMBAR PUNCTURE AND OBTAIN A DIRECT READING FROM THE CEREBROSPINAL FLUID. NASA'S LONG TERM FLIGHT CREWMEMBERS HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING VISUAL CHANGES POTENTIALLY RELATED TO ELEVATED INTRACRANIAL PRESSURE FROM THE HEAD-WARD FLUID SHIFT OF MICRO-GRAVITY. NASA'S MEDICAL COMMUNITY IS KEENLY INTERESTED IN MEASURING INTRACRANIAL PRESSURE (ICP) IN OUR CREWMEMBERS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A PAINFUL LUMBAR PUNCTURE.A NEW DEVICE, THE VITTAMED 205 HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WHICH CAN MEASURE ICP NON-INVASIVELY BY TRANSMITTING A TRANSCRANIAL DOPPLER WAVE THROUGH THE EYE-LID. THE VITTAMED 205 IS POTENTIAL TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN ACCURATELY MEASURE ICP NON-INVASIVELY WITHOUT NEEDING TO BE CALIBRATED TO THE PATIENT CREWMEMBER. THE VITTAMED 205 HAS BEEN APPROVED BY A EUROPEAN INVESTIGATION REVIEW BOARD TO BE USED IN A VALIDATION STUDY ON PATIENTS WITH ELEVATED INTRACRANIAL HYPERTENSION. NASA INTENDS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN OPPURTUNITY TO FACILITATE A PRE-APPROVED PROTOCOL BY PROVIDING SKILLED VITTAMED OPERATORS WHO WILL ENSURE THE ACCURACY OF AN INDEPENDENT VALIDATION STUDY FOR THIS EMERGING TECHNOLOGY IN UMEA,SWEDEN AT A FRACTION OF THE COST AND SCHEDULE THAN IF WE DID THE STUDY IN-HOUSE. OBTAINING PRECISE MEASUREMENT OF THE OPTHALMIC ARTERY REQUIRES A SKILLED, TRAINED OPERATOR. SINCE THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY HAVE BROAD SCIENTIFIC IMPLICATIONS, IT IS BENEFICIAL TO HAVE AN EXPERIENCED OPERATOR TAKE THE MEASUREMENTS TO CONFIRM ACCURACY AND REPEATABILITY.PROVIDE A SKILLED OPERATOR OF THE VITTAMED 205 FOR EACH DATA COLLECTION SESSION UTILIZING THE DEVICE IN THE UMEA STUDY AS DEFINED IN A PRE-APPROVED PROTOCOL. SPECIFIC TRAVEL DATES WILL BE NEGOTIATED BETWEEN THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR DR. JAN MALM, AND THE VITTA COROPORATION REPRESENTATIVE. TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR THE DEVICE OPERATOR AND THEIR EQUIPMENT SHOULD INCLUDE TRANSPORTAION, LODGING AND MEALS. THE TRAVEL PLAN WILL INVOLVE SENDING TWO OPERATORS ON FIVE TRIPS TO UMEA, SWEDEN. THE OPERATOR IS TO PROVIDE ALL MEASUREMENTS DATA TO THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR IN AN ELECTRONIC FORMAT AT THE STUDY SITE.
